Both Tomas Sowell and Chad Greenfield put together a collection of random thoughts. But were Greenfield’s thoughts his own? The majority of Greenfields essay follows hand in hand with Sowell’s. Almost every random subject brought up in his essay is used in Sowell’s column. Greenfield even used exact quotes throughout his essay from Sowell, without giving Sowell credit.…

As the name suggests, the central principle of this form of analysis is the concept of the drama. Life is a stage upon which performers play. The public performances they make (where public is what is done in the presence of other people or that affects other people—in other words, most acts are public) are what produce meaning. Thus meaning is produced in action. While dramaturgical analysis is generally used to explicate very public performances such as organizational rituals, it can also be used to understand relatively private performances such as the execution of parental roles. The analysis includes not only the act itself but also and, more important, the meaning produced by the act or the messages that are conveyed by the act. Dramaturgical analyses may focus on the display or they may focus on what makes up the display…

Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been thousands of books by many different people in the past and present, transcendentalism falls amongst all of these ideas. Great philosophers and writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were two of many that established the mindset that taught people that our spirits have deep connection with nature and that our ideas transcend the natural world as we see it. Both Emerson and Thoreau emphasized greatly on forming decisions without the input of others as well as being able to do what one enjoy rather than fitting in with conformity just to be accepted by society. People who practice Transcendentalism occasionally separate themselves from the world and get in touch with nature to be at peace with themselves. But traditional society was not too fond with the idea of people being transcendentalist, the ideas of nonconformity and free thought was intolerable to the fabricated social order of society. Though the general idea of transcendentalism has its strengths and could very well be practiced and a wonderful philosophy to live out, there are some weaknesses to the consequences of the actions some may do in order to do what they believe in. With a traditional conform culture, believing and practicing the acts of transcendentalism often caused trouble to the liberals who believed in individualism.…

The working class in Britain was a class that made up the majority of the poplulation, but did not have representtation in the British government. This lack of representation led them to have horrible working conditions, low wages, and widespread poverty throughout the working classes. The people became frusterated and during the 1830's and 1840's a new movement, Chartism, came about to solve their problems. Chartism was an attempt to link the economic plight of the working to a program of political reform. The Chartist movement is a complex movement that is viewed as both revolutionary by the Physical Force Chartists and the Middle Class, it is viewed as moderate by the Moral Force Chartists and the Traditional Rulling Classes.…

Due to the nature of the increasingly “global village” of today, there lies much debate in how to deal with relations between cultures of differing beliefs and ideologies. Madeline Albright’s “Faith and Diplomacy” suggests that religion is a key factor in such international relations, and is necessary to adjust one’s policies and strategies in order to deal with international and intra-national disputes. Albright appears to draw many of her ideas presented in “Faith and Diplomacy” from Kwame Anthony Appiah’s works on “cosmopolitanism.” As such, Albright does exemplify Appiah’s call for a cosmopolitan approach to the increasingly “global village” of today because both agree that there is a need for toleration and understanding, not agreement, and that there is a common power behind certain ideas and values that people hold.…

Before I begin my reasoning I would like you to disregard any prior political views and just keep an open mind. I would like you to imagine growing up in a family of six, your father left your mother when you were four. She has absolutely no college background and dropped out of high school when she was sixteen, as for your father he is addicted to heroin, crack, a variety of prescription pills and has spent more than half of his most current years in the slammer. I know that this is a bit extreme, but please bear with me; it is clear that your parents did not make the brightest decisions throughout life, but for you this only inspires you to follow an extremely different track and be the complete opposite of what they were.…
