Civic Sense

As you look around you, you are surrounded by the latest technology and everything seems to be more modern and mature. But, according to me the citizens of India are not mature enough when it comes to civic sense. This is the only thought that is lacking in the attitude of people. They are so focused towards their own goals that civic sense has become a matter of low priority to them.
So, what is civic sense? It is nothing but social ethics. A lot of people assume that civic sense is just about keeping the roads, streets and public property clean. But civic sense is lot more than that; it has to do with abiding to the laws, respect for fellow citizens and maintaining decorum in public places. A lot of foreign countries function in a smooth manner because of the strong civic sense amongst its citizens.
Even the schools do not give much importance to civic behaviour. Only a couple of lessons focus on this topic and it is out of the students’ mind the next day. Not even the parents at home give much importance to civic sense. They do not understand that preaching their children about civic sense can make a difference to the country as well as their lives.
Vandalism, separation, road rage are the few of the many examples of lack of civic sense. Riots take place as people do not respect each others religions and culture and infact, these are the people that lack civic sense.
As you visit different cities of India, you will find one thing in common, roadsides or public places littered with garbage and people spitting in different places. This makes us think that India has been turned into a garbage dump. This is all because of lack of civic sense among us. The other foreign countries are not so poorly maintained and are ten times cleaner and hygienic than India because the citizens of those countries have a stronger civic sense than those of India. They pay a hefty fine for vandalism, road rage and other

    Riots in Vancouver

    • 9 Pages

The term riot is often used in tandem with events like protests, rallies or marches. We think of people with common goals and/or grievances coming together to have their opinions and voices heard. Common themes include injustice, freedom and human rights. We can watch riots on the news on a near daily basis. Egypt is rioting for the end of an autocratic government, Syria is protesting the dictatorship of their President, and Greece is rioting for economic reform. These protests often begin with peaceful intentions but can lead to emotional flare-ups and violent outbursts. This moment is when a rally becomes a riot. Those who engage in such behaviours like acting out towards law enforcement, or damaging personal or public property can be considered deviant. These so called-deviants are going against the natural social order of things and disrupting society. Sometimes such deviant acts are considered malicious or criminal in nature and other times these same acts are considered heroic and for the “greater good” of society. It may become difficult to distinguish what constitutes a deviant act. For example, two people may engage in burning police cars but if one of those people is doing so in protest of civil war, society sees merit in his/her actions. If the second person is burning the police car in an alcohol-fueled rage against the loss of a hockey game, that person is seen as deviant and their actions are seen as criminal.…

Do you think there can be too much participation in the community? Well according to some there isn’t enough participation going on in our communities at all. Citizen participation may be a process in which people take part voluntary or legally forced to do either alone or in a group. According to our book, communitarian view praises citizen participation not just in the voting but by participating in groups and working with their neighbors to solve the problems of the community. One way to participate is volunteering as civic participation. Civic means working to make a difference in the civic life of the communities through both political and non-political processes. Civics directly addresses citizenship education within the context of political systems. Students study the assumptions upon which governments are founded, and the organizations and strategies governments employ to achieve their goals. With specific respect to the United States, students learn the underlying principles of representative democracy, the constitutional separation of powers, and the rule of law. They need to comprehend that an essential premise of representative democracy is the willingness of citizens to place a high premium on their own personal responsibility for participation in social decision-making. Students develop the skills which citizens must possess in order to discharge those responsibilities while protecting their rights and the rights of others. The study of civics prepares students to translate their beliefs into actions and their ideas into policies.…

Although, civic engagement is the ideal ingredient to a preferable democracy it can imply a significant cost to the government as a result of implementing plenty of resources in order to engage the community. Also, it is worth to mention that with more citizens participating eventually will lead to disputes between stakeholders with different interests and objectives. In addition, citizens could not be civic involved due to numerous factors. For example, social exclusion is one of the factors that interfere with the full participation of the society. Some examples of social exclusion include inequality, poverty, lack of freedom, and discrimination, which limit the social interaction. As well, social economic status is one of the variables that can influence civic engagement. In a capitalist society, were the main goal of the citizens is to achieve a high economic class and status, serves as an important factor in the orientation of their political ideas. In which, each stakeholder fights according to its own economic interests instead of looking for the best for everyone in general. Particularly, one solution in order to avoid the social exclusion could be looking for a social incorporation by a better education and work opportunities regardless of a person’s gender, ethnicity, class or language. This proposal could be challenging for the government but not impossible. In fact, skills and knowledge learned in schools could be the first step towards a potential…

Civic engagement creates change by allowing individuals to work together to bring about change in various ways by addressing social issues. In class, we discussed the four stages of civic engagement: pay attention to what’s around, talk about/get involved, reflect on the meaning of the conversations and experiences and stay involved/bring change. Seeds of Hope incorporates this model of civic engagement by working to create community gardens in Los Angeles and make residents more conscious of what they are eating.…

    Civic Engagement

In my opinion, civic engagement can involve many things. It is more than just doing some service learning or some other job in the community. For many things like that, people do it because they have to. Rarely will you find people that are doing for no personal gain. That is why I believe finding someone who is truly engaged in their community and trying to make a difference is hard to find. A perfect example that we have discussed this semester is Paul Farmer. He went over and above what we would consider “Civic Engagement”. He did all his work with selflessness; with more concern of the needs and well being of those around him, rather than himself. He sacrificed so much to make the lives of others better. Also, we learned about the allegory of the cave. That once you have left the cave and seen the light, that it is now your responsibility to go back in and teach the others about what you have seen. We must not confuse that Service Learning and Civic Engagement are not the same thing. Not all service learning has a civic dimension, and not all civic engagement is service learning. It can be defined as actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern. It is these issues of public concern that make Civic Engagement so difficult to define because those concerns can vary in different communities. In my high school, in order to graduate, we were required to do 20 hours of community service. I thought it was a great way to get the students involved in the community, and hopefully continue with it after High School. Then they would understand what it means to be engaged and active in your community. A public concern that is present here in Chico, and we have been learning about this semester, is Sustainability. This is a perfect way to show Civic Engagement. There are many organizations and clubs extending out side the college, and is a great way to become involved in the community. These have all been great…

Many times we as Americans do not think about the effect that civic engagement brings to the country.
