Lack of Civic Sense

As you look around, you are surrounded by the latest technology and everything seems to be more modern and mature. Citizens of India are not mature enough when it comes to civic sense. This is the only thought that is lacking in the attitude of people. They are so focused towards their own goals that civic sense has become a matter of low priority to them.
What is civic sense? It is nothing but social ethics. A lot of people assume that civic sense is just about keeping the roads, streets and public property clean. But it is lot more than that; it has to do with abiding to the laws, respect for fellow citizens and maintaining decorum in public places. A lot of foreign countries functions in a smooth manner because of the strong civic sense amongst its citizens.
Vandalism and road rage are the few of the many examples of lack of civic sense. Riots take place as people do not respect each other’s religions and culture.
As you visit different cities of India, you will find one thing in common, roadsides or public places littered with garbage and people spitting in different places. This makes us think that India has been turned into a garbage dump. This is all because of lack of civic sense among us.
This can only be removed if the government enforces stronger laws and regulations. The police force and the government workers also should be loyal to their work instead of being corrupted. I believe that this lack of civic sense can also be removed if we Indians understand its importance and apply the same to our daily lives. So here, I sign off with the hope that someday this fault in our fellow citizens can improve and India can become a better country.

    Riots in Vancouver

The term riot is often used in tandem with events like protests, rallies or marches. We think of people with common goals and/or grievances coming together to have their opinions and voices heard. Common themes include injustice, freedom and human rights. We can watch riots on the news on a near daily basis. Egypt is rioting for the end of an autocratic government, Syria is protesting the dictatorship of their President, and Greece is rioting for economic reform. These protests often begin with peaceful intentions but can lead to emotional flare-ups and violent outbursts. This moment is when a rally becomes a riot. Those who engage in such behaviours like acting out towards law enforcement, or damaging personal or public property can be considered deviant. These so called-deviants are going against the natural social order of things and disrupting society. Sometimes such deviant acts are considered malicious or criminal in nature and other times these same acts are considered heroic and for the “greater good” of society. It may become difficult to distinguish what constitutes a deviant act. For example, two people may engage in burning police cars but if one of those people is doing so in protest of civil war, society sees merit in his/her actions. If the second person is burning the police car in an alcohol-fueled rage against the loss of a hockey game, that person is seen as deviant and their actions are seen as criminal.…

Police corruption should be stopped in my opinion and according to Pauline Go, it can be reduced. “The best way to reduce corruption among police officials is to control it through various prevention strategies and introduce reforms every time.” If this was/is done more often then I feel that we wouldn’t have to worry about police corruption at all or if not at all then just a little bit, it wouldn’t be so much of a big concern as it is today.…

The images are haunting, fathers and mothers grieving as they bury their sons and daughters because of gang violence. Mourning relatives at funerals and candlelight community vigils fill our television screens and newspaper front pages. Gang violence in America is once again on the rise. Nationwide gang homicides are up an alarming 50 percent since 1999. Serious violent criminals need to be arrested, convicted and locked up. But in order to curb gang violence we must find ways to intervene and offer alternatives to the gang lifestyle in order to save at-risk children before it’s too late.…

Civic engagement creates change by allowing individuals to work together to bring about change in various ways by addressing social issues. In class, we discussed the four stages of civic engagement: pay attention to what’s around, talk about/get involved, reflect on the meaning of the conversations and experiences and stay involved/bring change. Seeds of Hope incorporates this model of civic engagement by working to create community gardens in Los Angeles and make residents more conscious of what they are eating.…

    Civic Engagement

In my opinion, civic engagement can involve many things. It is more than just doing some service learning or some other job in the community. For many things like that, people do it because they have to. Rarely will you find people that are doing for no personal gain. That is why I believe finding someone who is truly engaged in their community and trying to make a difference is hard to find. A perfect example that we have discussed this semester is Paul Farmer. He went over and above what we would consider “Civic Engagement”. He did all his work with selflessness; with more concern of the needs and well being of those around him, rather than himself. He sacrificed so much to make the lives of others better. Also, we learned about the allegory of the cave. That once you have left the cave and seen the light, that it is now your responsibility to go back in and teach the others about what you have seen. We must not confuse that Service Learning and Civic Engagement are not the same thing. Not all service learning has a civic dimension, and not all civic engagement is service learning. It can be defined as actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern. It is these issues of public concern that make Civic Engagement so difficult to define because those concerns can vary in different communities. In my high school, in order to graduate, we were required to do 20 hours of community service. I thought it was a great way to get the students involved in the community, and hopefully continue with it after High School. Then they would understand what it means to be engaged and active in your community. A public concern that is present here in Chico, and we have been learning about this semester, is Sustainability. This is a perfect way to show Civic Engagement. There are many organizations and clubs extending out side the college, and is a great way to become involved in the community. These have all been great…

Even though India is a country with rich cultural heritage and strong moral values, it is being observed that human values in our society are declining day-by-day. The decline in moral values is reflected by the increasing crime & corruption in current time. This may possibly be due to, the excessive influence of electronic media, internet & mobile phones, increasing practice of nuclear family system(comprising of no elders), lack of genuine role models(except for a handful) and rapidly growing urbanization. The fast and contingent life-style accepted by the individuals to fulfill their greed (considering that as need has also aggravated the decline.…
