When the Civil War broke out Clara Barton was one of the first volunteers to appear at the Washington Infirmary to care for wounded soldiers. After the Battle of Bull Run, she established an agency to obtain and distribute supplies to wounded soldiers. In July 1862, Clara Barton lobbied and won permission to travel behind the lines to administer aid to soldiers of both the North and South. Clara reached some of the grimmest battlefields of the war and served during the sieges of Petersburg and Richmond. Her presence, and the supplies she brought with her in three army wagons, was particularly welcome at the Battle of Antietam, where overworked surgeons were trying to make bandages out of corn husks. She organized the men to perform first aid, carry water, and prepare food for the wounded. Prior to Clara’s work with wounded soldiers, the military had never allowed female nurses in army camps or hospitals. Most of the supplies that Ms. Barton delivered were purchased with donations solicited by Ms. Barton or purchased with her own funds.…

    Civil Peace Dbq

In Germany, in 1914, a civil peace was declared at the time of the proclamation of war. This meant that all previous inner and exterior conflicts would be put to the side until after the war. At the same time that this was declared, the troops were being mobilized to fight. German citizens’ opinions changed from being excited during the proclamation of war to ignoring the main effects and law of civil peace during the war, and then to being upset and frustrated after the war. I think it is important to notice how this behavior changes from the start to the end of the war.…

As American people, we know that we are entitled to certain rights according to the constitution; one of which is freedom of speech. In Civility and Its Discontents, Leslie Epstein explores the limits and contradictions of this much cherished right when considering whether he would expel a student who wrote racial slurs in the dorm rooms of a University if it was up to him. He discusses this situation and topics that stem from it in an analytical yet somewhat emotionally involved tone and makes the reader reflect on the wide range of information presented about the issues of political correctness, freedom of speech, expulsion, and racism.…

Movies that are "based on actual events" are usually not the same as the real events upon which they are based. "A Civil Action" is one of these movies. The basic points covered in the movie are the same. However there were some key elements from the trial left out of the movie. These elements were some of the crucial errors made by Schlichtmann that led to him losing the case.…

    • 2280 Words
    • 10 Pages

The movie A Civil Action is focused on describing and explaining what really goes on in a court of law. The case the movie deals with is a small firm going after a national corporation in order to get them to apologize for what they did to the city’s water. It is believed that the company would dump harmful waste such as trichloroethylene into the back of their site where the company was located into a small running river. However, the river was connected to the city’s water wells and caused harm to many children that drank the water. The way each lawsuit is handled can be related to a sociological perspective. The Marxist approach can best explain the process and outcome of the case in A Civil Action.…

Movements around the globe have stemmed from peaceful beginnings, and in the United States alone, many prominent peaceful movements have brought about some of the most prominent reforms put forth by the government. Being that no real results can be expected from mere picketing and passive proclamations from a megaphone, these demonstrations often break the law in some way, explaining where the label of disobedience comes from. Civil disobedience is an increasing practice worldwide, and it is proven to be exceptionally effective when put to the test against oppressive regimes, unjust laws, and stoic governments. It has been practiced by some of the most influential leaders of the civil rights movement in the United States such…

The situation that is being focused on in this paper is the fighting street crime, specifically a street gang that has been operating in Redondo Beach, California. While trying to fight this negative force in the community, the criminal justice had to come up with innovative ideas, they realize that focusing on a specific trouble area is one that is not new to most law enforcement officers. It is believed that the “shifting the focus of policing from responding to incidents to proactive crime prevention has important strategic implications, many of which involve structural changes.” (Terry 308)…

    What Is a Civil Union

    • 356 Words

The authors, Jess Henig and Lori Robertson, who wrote the essay “What is a Civil Union?” present three differences between civil unions and marriages as the rights to federal benefits, portability of civil unions, and terminology of marriage. Henig and Robertson introduce the essay with how state and federal laws regarding gay marriage differ in that states allowing civil unions extend state benefits to same-sex married couples however, The Defense of Marriage Act states that for all legal purposes marriage is a union between one man and one woman therefore, federal marriage benefits are not extended to same-sex married couples. States with legalized civil unions including Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Vermont allow same-sex married couples state benefits. The authors go on to describe the differences of state and federal benefits. These include that same-sex married couples are allowed to file a joint state tax return, but must file separate federal tax returns claiming themselves as single. Additionally, if one spouse works for a company whose health care is governed by the state laws that coverage is extended to the spouse, however if the company if governed by federal laws then it is up to the employer if they will extend health coverage to the same-sex spouse. In conclusion, if a spouse were to die, the survivor would have the right to Social Security payments based on the earnings of the married couple. Moving into the middle of the essay, the authors inform us that New Jersey is the only state that allows portability of civil unions meaning that the same-sex partnership is transferable to another civil union state. The controversial issues of the traditional views of marriage conclude the essay with an argument from adversaries including Jenny Tyree with Focus on the Family, expressing that same-sex marriage discourages the traditional views of marriage as man, women, and children.…

In this movie, Jan Schlichtmann gets played by John Travolta as he goes through the life changing case with his lawyer firm. He had come up with this trial by parents calling him up looking for answers. These parents had one thing in common. They had lost children to Leukemia and they credited it to the water being contaminated by the pouring of a threatening chemical called Trichloroethylene. At first the reason to why he took this case was because he believed he could bring down two huge companies, Beatrice foods, and Grace Company. If he was able to succeed in taking them down, he would make millions of dollars for himself. As the movie progresses he realizes he’s doing all this for the parents more than for his own selfish reasons anymore and wants justice to be served. He didn’t win, literally lost everything, and the families won in the end as the plants were brought down.…
