Civil Disobedience in Antigone

IB English, Period 4

Civil Disobedience and Antigone Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech focuses on the importance of freedom and brotherhood in a nation and is intended to rally Americans to demonstrate their anger at the injustices of segregation and racism through “creative protest.” While King’s passion and anger at the status quo is obvious in the text, he specifically states that they “must not allow [their] [protest] to degenerate into physical violence.” He is pushing for defiance against the government. Antigone exhibits the same kind of defiance when she goes against Creon’s law and completes her brother’s burial rites. Antigone, like Martin Luther King Jr., was faced with conflicting obligations; the obligation of a citizen to follow the law, and personal obligation to fight what one feels is wrong. A theme appears in both texts that one’s morals are more important than the law of the land. Antigone sacrificed her life to complete what she felt needed to be completed based on her religious beliefs. King dedicated his life to obtaining freedom for black people in America and was eventually killed for what he believed in, linking the two. If Sophocles and Martin Luther King Jr. were to have a conversation, the two would most certainly agree on some things. Both would agree that one must follow their heart and fight things they feel must be changed. They would agree that one must not stand idly by as injustice takes place, such as segregation or the body of one’s brother left to rot above the ground. While Antigone is not a central figure in a civil rights movement, she does exhibit civil disobedience, bridging the “I Have a Dream” speech and

Sophocles’ age old play Antigone is about a young girl who fights King Creon’s unjust law for the burial of her brother who was deemed a traitor to their town. With the act of civil disobedience both Antigone and Creon strive for their own justice but in the end meet their fate. A more modern way of civil disobedience would be the strategy that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used. The steps a person can use to change a law they find unjust are explained in his essay “The Power of Non-Violence” and “The Letter to Birmingham Jail”. Martin Luther King’s theory has four major steps: first finding an injustice exists, negotiation, self-purification and direct action. Although Antigone’s actions against Creon do not completely conform to Marin Luther…

In the play Antigone by Sophocles, the main character defies the king and the civil law of Thebes to follow her heart and put her brother, Polyneices, to rest. Most people know the name Susan B Anthony; she exhibited civil disobedience in the form of illegally voting in the 1872 Presidential elections. Many people will be surprised to find out that Antigone and Susan are a lot alike. They both fought for what they believed in, despite the fact that they were women and were "sexually inferior" to men, but they have their differences as well; which include, Antigone was defying the law because she wanted her brother to have a proper burial, but Susan defied the law because she felt women deserved the same voting rights as men.…

Additionally, violating the law brings harm to others. For example, in Scene 5 it states, "The burden you carry in your hands is heavy, But it is not all: you will find more in your house... The Queen is dead." (Lines 1000 & 1002). Due to Antigone breaking the law it lead to the death of many. Antigone's one decision to bury Polyneices consequently caused a chain reaction of negative outcomes such as harm to others.…

The two authors saw a need for civil disobedience. In “Antigone” the protagonist decided that despite what the king had said she was going to follow through with her religious and traditional burial rights for her brother. “No, he has no right to keep me from my own.” (Sophocles p. 13) Her brother was deemed a traitor by the king and he forbade anyone to ‘honor’ him by burying or even mourning his death. However, Antigone loved her brother and did not want to dishonor her gods by leaving his body out in the open for the wild animals to pick over and devour. So she completed his burial rights, as she stated to the king that it was not his right to take that away from her brother. “Nor did I think that your edict had such force that you, a mere mortal could override the gods, the great unwritten, unshakeable traditions.” (Sophocles p. 18) The consequences for her actions of going against the king were such that she was buried alive in the tombs. Like Antigone, Dr. King had strong religious faith. In his writings “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” he uses civil disobedience as a way to make people understand the importance of desegregation in the south. His desire was to see an end to segregation in the southern state of Alabama in 1963. Dr. King organized many nonviolent protests…

In Sophocle’s play “Antigone”, a conflict grows between Antigone and Creon. A conflict between the two aforementioned people commenced when Creon discovered that Antigone had buried Polyneices. Crean says, “But this is Antigone! Why have you brought her here?”. The sentry bringing the news replies with “She was burying him, I tell you!” (732, 17-18). Secondly, the conflict between them grew when Antigone calls out Creon’s selfish behavior. One of the illustrations of civil disobedience comes at the actions of Antigone. For many years, civil disobedience is understood as being the right to resist government against laws that citizens believe are morally incorrect. Antigone portrays this type of defiance towards King Kreon. She, in an act of disobedience, directly violates a command put by the king, which states that her brother Polyneices will not be given a proper burial. Since Antigone strongly believes this is morally incorrect, she attempts to still give honor to her brother by burying him. Antigone`s disobedience towards Kreon`s rules is portrayed by the following quote, “You must be as you believe. I will bury him myself. If I die for doing that, good: I will stay with him,…

This is evident in the act of disobedience displayed by Antigone when she buried her brother Polynices. Her uncle Creon instituted a law that forbade anyone to weep for or bury her slain brother. Antigone felt that this was wrong and asked her sister Ismene for assistance in their brother's burial. Ismene did not want to help because she feared what would happen if they disobeyed the law. During this conversation, Antigone told Ismene, "I won't insist, no, even if you should have a change of heart, I'd never welcome you in the labor, not with me. So, do as you like, whatever suits you best – I will bury him myself (lines 82-85 pg. 660)". This one statement shows that at this point and time women had began to become more independent because though faced with the threats of cruel punishment, women would break a law and defy power to fight what they believe in. Antigone buried her brother even though she knew it would mean death to her if she was found guilty of the act against her uncle's…

Structure is needed for a society to thrive. Without it, people would do anything they pleased, with little consideration or concern for others. Structure, usually in the form of laws created by a person of power, is what keeps a group of people together, and allows for peaceful order between these individuals. Laws, however, can sometimes be corrupted by the one that is governing them. Although these laws may go against what is good for the people, fear can often times effect the way a population behaves. There are also times when someone stands up against the unmoral laws set by a powerful government, making logical arguments against them, and sparking positive change in a society. Whether through the power of fear or the expression of reason, it is usually the voice of an individual that influences the thoughts and actions of an entire society.…

In Antigone, by Sophocles, there is conflict between the characters Antigone and Creon. Antigone is characterized as a rebellious girl, who turns into a martyr, and just lost both her brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, in a war between the city-states of Thebes and Argos. Eteocles was fighting the war on Thebes’s side, Thebes is where they live, but Polynices was fighting for the Argos army. Creon, the king of Thebes as well as Antigone’s uncle, has made a law that Polynices may not be given proper burial rights on the account of him being a traitor to Thebes. Antigone feels personally victimized by this law, she feels as though Creon has created this law entirely for her and Ismene, her sister. Antigone, the rebel, defies Creon’s orders and “buries” Polynices with one handful of dirt and in return is arraigned and executed, or more accurately committed suicide while she sat in her death chamber. Personally, I feel that both characters are wrong in their actions; however, I don’t fully understand the thought processes of ancient Theban citizens either.…
