Civil Disobedience In Antigone Essay
One of its earliest massive implementations was brought about by Egyptians against the British occupation in the 1919 Revolution.[3] Civil disobedience is one of the many ways people have rebelled against what they deem to be unfair laws. It has been used in many nonviolent resistance movements in India (Gandhi's campaigns for independence from the British Empire), in Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution and in East Germany to oust their communist governments,[4] In South Africa in the fight against apartheid, in the American Civil Rights Movement, in the Singing Revolution to bring independence to the Baltic countries from the Soviet Union, recently with the 2003 Rose Revolution in Georgia and the 2004 Orange Revolution[5] in Ukraine, among other various movements worldwide.

One of the oldest depictions of civil disobedience is in Sophocles' play Antigone, in which Antigone, one of the daughters of former King of Thebes, Oedipus, defies Creon, the current King of Thebes, who is trying to stop her from giving her brother Polynices a proper burial. She gives a stirring speech in which she tells him that she must obey her conscience rather than human law. She is not at all afraid of the death he

It is perhaps the first modern[vague] statement of the principle of nonviolent protest.[7] A version was taken up by the author Henry David Thoreau in his essay Civil Disobedience, and later by Gandhi in his doctrine of Satyagraha.[7] Gandhi's Satyagraha was partially influenced and inspired by Shelley's nonviolence in protest and political action.[8] In particular, it is known that Gandhi would often quote Shelley's Masque of Anarchy to vast audiences during the campaign for a free

Sophocles’ age old play Antigone is about a young girl who fights King Creon’s unjust law for the burial of her brother who was deemed a traitor to their town. With the act of civil disobedience both Antigone and Creon strive for their own justice but in the end meet their fate. A more modern way of civil disobedience would be the strategy that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used. The steps a person can use to change a law they find unjust are explained in his essay “The Power of Non-Violence” and “The Letter to Birmingham Jail”. Martin Luther King’s theory has four major steps: first finding an injustice exists, negotiation, self-purification and direct action. Although Antigone’s actions against Creon do not completely conform to Marin Luther…

He orders Eteocles given an honorable funeral and Polyneices to be left in the streets to rot. However, the dead brothers’ sister, Antigone, believes this unfair to Polyneices and insulting to the Gods.…

Without civil disobedience it’s impossible to see where we would be today. The first act of civil disobedience was the Boston Tea Party. On December, 16, 1773 the group Sons of Liberty created a political demonstration against the Tea Act. The Tea Act was an unfair tax used to make us pay for their war. This is one of many times we were treated differently and unfairly than citizens living in Britain. The act of throwing tea into the harbor ignited tension for more people to protest and overthrow the…

One of the illustrations of civil disobedience comes at the actions of Antigone. For many years, civil disobedience is understood as being the right to resist government against laws that citizens believe are morally incorrect. Antigone portrays this type of defiance towards King Kreon. She, in an act of disobedience, directly violates a command put by the king, which states that her brother Polyneices will not be given a proper burial. Since Antigone strongly believes this is morally incorrect, she attempts to still give honor to her brother by burying him. Antigone`s disobedience towards Kreon`s rules is portrayed by the following quote, “You must be as you believe. I will bury him myself. If I die for doing that, good: I will stay with him,…

Civil disobedience is defined as a rising up against an established law in order to expose the lack of morality in the law. In Antigone it is clear that what the king was trying to do was unjust and unfair. Antigone was arrested for burying Polynices, her brother, after the king refused to bury him. If Eteocles, her other brother, could be buried with full military honors, then why could they not do the same for Polynices. Similarly in 1872 a woman named Susan B. Anthony was arrested because she "defiantly registered and cast a ballot" in Rochester, New York (Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia).…

Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech focuses on the importance of freedom and brotherhood in a nation and is intended to rally Americans to demonstrate their anger at the injustices of segregation and racism through “creative protest.” While King’s passion and anger at the status quo is obvious in the text, he specifically states that they “must not allow [their] [protest] to degenerate into physical violence.” He is pushing for defiance against the government. Antigone exhibits the same kind of defiance when she goes against Creon’s law and completes her brother’s burial rites. Antigone, like Martin Luther King Jr., was faced with conflicting obligations; the obligation of a citizen to follow the law, and personal obligation to fight what one feels is wrong. A theme appears in both texts that one’s morals are more important than the law of the land. Antigone sacrificed her life to complete what she felt needed to be completed based on her religious beliefs. King dedicated his life to obtaining freedom for black people in America and was eventually killed for what he believed in, linking the two. If Sophocles and Martin Luther King Jr. were to have a conversation, the two would most certainly agree on some things. Both would agree that one must follow their heart and fight things they feel must be changed. They would agree that one must not stand idly by as injustice takes place, such as segregation or the body of one’s brother left to rot above the ground. While Antigone is not a central figure in a civil rights movement, she does exhibit civil disobedience, bridging the “I Have a Dream” speech and…

The third of the three Theban plays, known as Antigone, written by Sophocles is a great tragedy with characters who each have distinct personality traits, morals, and flaws; one being Haemon who possesses many. Haemon, the son of Creon and spouse-to-be to Antigone, has absolute loyalty towards Antigone and the people of Thebes, respect for his father’s decisions initially, and rashness which leads to a shattering ending. Haemon helps protect Antigone by speaking on her behalf to his father, the King, vindicating how “of all women here she’s least deserves the worst of deaths for her most glorious act. When in the slaughter her own brother died, she did not just leave him there unburied, to be ripped apart by carrion dogs or birds. Surely she deserves some golden honour?”(Sophocles ). This shows how he defends the moral basis of Antigone's actions while warning his father that the people of Thebes sympathize with her determination to bury Polyneices. Haemon’s devotion to Antigone is represented as a dog face structure of the mask, showing his faithfulness because dogs exhibit to be extremely loyal to their owners. When Creon asks Haemon whether he still has his full support, Haemon replies “Father, I am yours; with your excellent judgment you lay the right before me, and I shall follow it. No marriage will ever be so valued by me as to override the goodness of your leadership” (Sophocles ). Even though his father, Creon, is going to kill Antigone for her actions, he still respects his decision formerly. Another symbol, to express respect is a handshake icon, with one hand having a crown, on the masks side of the face to show Haemon’s regard for Creon as the king. After a previous antagonistic disagreement with his father, before he kills himself, Haemon spits in his father’s face and “drew his cross-hilted sword and thrust it at [himself]” (Sophocles ).…

Mahatma Gandhi employed a campaign of peaceful resistance in the first half of the twentieth so that India could be independent from Great Britain and possess institutions that protected the rights of Indians. Some years later, American civil rights organizations continued this approach, organizing sit-ins and marches to force governments to change policies that discriminated against African Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote that civil disobedience,“seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue”. It uses the power of the people to force institutional action. Civil disobedience tactics can be just as effective today, just look at Cedric Herrou a French farmer who illegally transported African migrants into France for humanitarian reasons.…

The play “Antigone,” by Sophocles displays an interesting storyline in which the main characters Antigone and Creon undergo various obstacles due to their actions. Throughout the play, Antigone attempts to secure a respectable burial for her brother Polyneices. By choosing to protest and defy Creon’s rule, Antigone unquestionably breaks the law. However, her defiance does not seem like an act of civil disobedience against injustice because Antigone was acting in her own self-interest when considering dying for her brother.…

Mohandas Gandhi exhibited this during India’s independence movement. Gandhi held non-violent protests to fight for India’s independence. By protesting, Gandi displayed disobedience towards the British to earn rights for himself and others. He was able to peacefully achieve his goal of independence for India. Gandhi proved that disobedience allows people to create change that may not happen by following rules. People may argue that disobedience is injurious because it creates a rude, harmful society of people. This conjecture is incorrect because as Gandhi established, disobedience can be peaceful. Gandhi and all of his supporters were able to disobey while remaining non-violent to receive their rights from the British. Disobedience helps people improve their society and causes minimal harm, making it an exceedingly valuable human…

Civil disobedience is a key part of the rights that all Americans now have. Civil disobedience allows for the people to take a stand against rules and regulations that they do not agree with. From movements such as ending slavery, women voting, and racial equality, civil disobedience was a major factor in getting the attention of those who had the position to make a change. Rosa Parks wouldn't give up her seat on a bus, which brought national attention to rising concerns of racial equality in the 1950s and 1960s. Martin Luther King Junior held many rallies and marches to make his point well known, and impossible to ignore by the people who had the power to change the laws of the day. From as far back as Harriet Tubman, who helped slaves…
