CIVIL ENGINEERING CAREER OVERVIEW

CIVIL ENGINEERS ARE INVOLVED IN MONITORING AND GUIDING AS WELL AS DEVISING AND DESIGNING THE BUILDING OF ROADS, GIRDERS, BRIDGES, AIRPORTS, TUNNELS, DAMS, WATER & SEWAGE SYSTEMS AND OTHER STRUCTURES. CIVIL ENGINEERING IS ONE OF THE OLDEST DISCIPLINES OF ENGINEERING AND CONTAINS A VARIETY OF SPECIALTIES LIKE STRUCTURAL, WATER RELATED, ENVIRONMENTAL, ARCHITECTURAL, TRANSPORTATION AND GEO-TECHNICAL ENGINEERING.
ADMINISTRATIVE OR SUPERVISORY JOBS ARE HELD BY MANY CIVIL ENGINEERS WHILE OTHERS WORK IN DEVISING, COMPOSING, CONSTRUCTING, RESEARCHING AND TEACHING JOBS.
IN 2002, AROUND 228,000 POSITIONS WERE HELD BY CIVIL ENGINEERS. ALMOST HALF OF THEM HELD JOBS IN ARCHITECTURAL, ENGINEERING AND OTHER FIRMS WHERE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS WAS THE CHIEF OBJECTIVE. AROUND ONE-THIRD OF ALL EMPLOYMENT IS CREATED BY FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. THE REMAINING JOB OPPORTUNITIES ARE CREATED BY THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR. MANY CIVIL ENGINEERS ARE HIRED AS CONSULTANTS AND AS MANY AS 15,000 ARE SELF EMPLOYED.
CIVIL ENGINEERS USUALLY WORK NEAR MAJOR INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL CENTERS, OFTEN AT CONSTRUCTION SITES. SOME PROJECTS ARE SITUATED IN REMOTE AREAS OR IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES. IN SOME JOBS, CIVIL ENGINEERS MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE TO WORK ON DIFFERENT PROJECTS.
CIVIL ENGINEERS ARE SITUATED NEAR CHIEF INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL HUBS AND OFTEN WORK NEAR CONSTRUCTION SITES AND PROJECTS. SOME OF THESE PROJECTS MAY ALSO BE OUT OF THE COUNTRY IN BACKWARD OR SECLUDED AREAS. OFTEN, CIVIL ENGINEERS ARE REQUIRED TO MOVE TO DIFFERENT PLACES FOR THE COMPLETION OF EACH PROJECT.

In addition to their involvement in design and development, many engineers work in testing, production, or maintenance. These engineers supervise production in factories, determine the causes of a component’s failure, and test manufactured products to maintain quality. They also estimate the time and cost required to complete projects. Supervisory engineers are responsible for major components or entire projects. (See the statement on engineering and natural sciences managers elsewhere in the Handbook.)…

Civil Engineers have to know how to design and assemble shapes to construct buildings, dams, bridges, tunnels, highway systems. Civil Engineer must understand and know how to compute such quantities as lengths, areas, volumes, centroids, moments of inertia, and curvatures of a building. Civil Engineers also help build my most favorite place in the world, they help with the designing of soccer fields. The whole field is 120 by 75 yards, the midfield has to be right in the middle of the field, they also have to measure the size of the keeper box which is 6 yards by 20 yards and the penalty box is 18 yards by 40 yards, they also have to help construct the goals that is the length of 8 yards, and last the corners of the field have to be exactly 90 degrees with a quarter circle on the inside of the field so we know where to take the corner kick…

I had the pleasure of interviewing Bob Appleton, a civil engineer at Texas A&M. The questions I asked him that taught me the most about civil engineering were “What is your daily job as a civil engineer?” and “What are the personal qualities you need to be a civil engineer? For example, motivation, etc.” Mr. Appleton said as a civil engineer, your daily job is to take data that surveyors collected in the field, either on the the ground or by aerial photographs (which he explained as being similar to images seen on Google Earth). Then you use the data to create drawings and designs for many different structures such as buildings, roads, bridges, ports, etc. Mr. Appleton said that to be a civil engineer you need to possess the qualities of integrity…

Case 1: Shortage of Civil Engineers in India This article highlights how India, the world’s new “high-tech” titan, is facing the problem of poor infrastructure due to a lack of civil engineers. Our group examined several factors that could have led to the shortage as well as analyzed the effects of government intervention in India’s labor market for civil engineers. Market Forces of Demand and Supply Firstly, the low entry salary of civil engineers makes the career unappealing, even to civil engineering graduates. The resulting shortage can be seen as the difference between quantity supplied, Q1, and quantity demanded, Q2 as shown in Figure 1 where entry wage is depicted as WA.…

Civil Engineers build significant structures that can last more than a century, some of these structures such as Burj Khalifa, pyramids and evil towers in France can be considered as landmarks, because of its history and its beauty of design. Civil Engineers study the four factors of building structures to determine which tools and materials they will use in order to build permanent structures. Although engineers studying the factors and take the determination, there is some disasters occurred in many places because of many reasons. Nick Spurrier said “There will always be failures or disasters as engineers and designers push the boundaries by building taller buildings, longer bridges, or by reaching further into space”. In this outline I will show some of engineering disasters that happened before and what are the reasons.…
