can say whatever they want as long as they stay peaceful because they have to right to do so. Everyone wants what they believe in or what they want to happen, so they will voice their opinion and try to convince other people into believing what they do. And there is nothing wrong with that because everyone has the freedom of speech. The first amendment still affects our lives today because people will protest anything that they do not agree with. With the freedom of assembly, it allows people to do so, as long as they do not harm anyone. It affects us today because it lets us voices be heard and taken and sometimes our voices change other people’s views, which may lead to a bigger change.
Colin Kaepernick, a professional football player for the San Francisco 49’ers voiced his opinion during a preseason game this year.
Before the game when the National Anthem was being played, Kaepernick took a knee instead of standing up and representing the flag. He says by doing this he is standing up for the oppressed people in the country. Kaepernick claims that before the game he did not tell anyone about what he was planning on doing. He felt as if it was his own right to stand up or not during the Anthem. “If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right,” Kaepernick says after the game. He still continues to take knees during the Anthem at every game. This article relates to the first amendment because when Colin Kaepernick kneels during the Anthem, all he is doing is taking advantage of his right to freedom of speech. Since it is not mandatory to stand during the Anthem, he isn’t breaking any laws. Many feel as if he is a disgrace to this country by not representing the flag, the thing that ties America together, but it is his freedom to do what he wants in this situation. People can either agree or disagree with his stance but no one can punish him for what he is
doing. The first amendment still affects our lives today because everyone voices their opinion at some point in their lives and there is nothing we can do about it because it is a right given to every American citizen. People all over the US stand up for what they feel is right and fight for what they believe in, and they won’t stop until a difference is made. They want to let others know how they feel and try to show others that what they see is better than their own, or at least let people know why they believe a certain way.
