Before the civil war happened, the northern army was a small army, when crisis came volunteers came to protect their land and freedoms if threatened. the souths army was only made up of white men, while the norths army was made of foreign people who came from different countries, white men and eventually blacks after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. As the war continued the army only had five major goals. The armies’ major goals were to block the southern coasts, capture and control the Mississippi River, capture the Souths capital Richmond, destroying Atlanta and Savannah, and break the southern spirt. With blocking the southern coast, it would prevent foreign power, leaving the south to fight on their own. When the northern captured
