Before the civil war happened, the northern army was a small army, when crisis came volunteers came to protect their land and freedoms if threatened. the souths army was only made up of white men, while the norths army was made of foreign people who came from different countries, white men and eventually blacks after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. As the war continued the army only had five major goals.
