Black men were barred from joining the U.S. military because of an existing federal law passed in 1792. President Lincoln was apprehensive about allowing black men to join and fight, he felt that it may drive the border states to join the confederate and secede. Much of the presidents first term he wanted to end the war and keep the union whole. So his veiw was not for or against slavery, it wasn’t until he felt he may lose re-election. He knew that he would have to change his view.

Same goes for the items of this period. However man do not think that it was about liberty on both sides, or so they believed. Both sides felt they were preserving liberty. The south felt that the founders intended on white men owning black slaves, because it was written into the constitution by them. Though it is possible that they did not know why it was written in as such. Our original “rights” for the first ten years came from the Articles of Federation. While negotiations over a new article they felt it was better to appease the southern farmers than to be a broken nation. Other countries would view a divided America as weak and vulnerable, and that they may take advantage of this and start wars. The North felt that it was hypocritical that we were a nation of freedom and liberty and that all men were created equal but yet the slaves did not enjoy any of these rights that whites
