The North was fighting so that they could protect their country and wanted to end slavery. The North at first was fighting the South because they had begun the war, not for the abolishment of slavery. Most of the North, including the President himself, was fine with slavery. It Document 1, President Lincoln states that he has no problems with slavery as long as it stays within the states it has already been a part of and not into any new territories.
