The war was started due to a divide between the North and the South. There where advantages to both sides but only one could win.
The Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1865. Abraham Lincoln was voted President in 1860. He had said “Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free…” (The History Place) After he was elected, seven slave states separated themselves from the U.S and formed the Confederate States. These states are South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas. Later four more states joined in. Those four are Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. In 1861 the following states joined South Carolina to form the Confederate States: Mississippi on January 9, Florida January 10, Alabama January 11, Georgia January 19, Louisiana January 26, and Texas February 1. On February 4, these states met in Alabama to set up government for the Confederate States of America. Four days later a constitution was written which was based off of the Constitution of the United States. They also made up a congress and elected a President along with a Vice President. They held office until February 2, 1862, and after an uncontested election, they were elected permanently. President Lincoln asked the upper South to send their military to help the United States, but they refused. Instead they joined the Confederate States and they were Virginia on April 17, Arkansas on May 6, North Carolina on May 20, and Tennessee on June 8.
There were advantages with the North vs. the South. The Northern states had a population of 22,000,000 in 22 states, while the South had a population of 9,000,000 in 11 states, 4,000,000 of which were slaves. The North also had a large share of shipyards and a large share of various industries. Another advantage was Lincoln’s position on slavery and democracy since he was the President. Another advantage for the North was in the South tax evasion and draft dodging was very common. This caused people who had fortune and preferred luxuries instead of war
