The civil war spawned some of the most gruesome battles in america’s history, but besides the immeasurable loss of life what truly made the war such a significant event in America's history? After the Union victory in the plight to end slavery and provide equity among the races, life changed many ways for blacks and whites, but some things never changed despite the efforts of Abraham Lincoln and his supporters. The country was split in two with the North in power and the South creatively opposing the fair treatment of blacks. The conclusion of the civil war brought many positive and negative repercussions that changed the balance of the United States and eventually led to the nation we have today. This was well presented in his speech about unity. Stated in Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address “-to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations”. It is well known that Abraham Lincoln opposed slavery and felt very strongly about fair treatment to all. He believed that, even though the war and the conflicting morals that spawned it tore the country in half, the North and South had to be one unified nation. The very same unity that is heavily publicized in today’s government. Another important statement in Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address was “-let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds-”. This proved Lincoln obviously believed very greatly in peace, even before the war. As slavery was being legally abolished, he hoped the North and South would mend the rift caused by war and become one nation again despite their differences. Despite the hatred and conflict that started the war many years ago, his influence among many eventually affected the nation’s will to fall apart. All of which led to a general acceptance African American rights and policies put into place to create peace between the north, south, blacks, and whites. Unfortunately despite the high death toll many blacks are not accepted today and controversy has not died, but without the civil war slavery might not be as slandered as it is by the majority. Many have different opinions of the civil war and it’s effect, but the compleat nation that Abraham Lincoln believed in set a trend of unity is still heavily publicized to day, weather it’s practised or in many cases
