Simon was a character that stood by Ralph and Piggy throughout the novel. He is unfortunately is killed when Jack and the rest of the group join in a psychotic dance. A group of boys go up to find the beast, but instead find a dead pilot, which they assume is the beast. Like most of the core members of civilization, in this novel, is killed. This death is caused directly by Roger. Roger ends up, high up with a boulder. Roger then causes it to roll down castle rock and hit Piggy, knocking him down the side of Castle Rock, hitting a rock and dying. Along with him, when he falls he was carrying the conch, a symbol of organization. The Conch is used throughout the novel whenever Ralph wishes to call a meeting and the people of the tribe could only speak when they were holding it. When Piggy hits the bottom and dies, the conch breaks, the two strongest remaining symbols of civilization, gone, civilization collapses into chaos.
Fire in Lord of the Flies, fire is with the side of Civilization. It is used as a signal fire for ships, and cooking food. But in the final chapters fire is used against civilization. When Ralph is running from Jack and his tribe, he hides in a thicket to try to escape them. They do many things to get him out, but one of them is using fire to smoke him out.
