Personality

Clary has an interesting personality. She is very stubborn and won’t back down till she reaches her goal, because of this she will put herself in lots of danger, which make the people that care about her very exasperated. She is sarcastic and head strong, so she will make lots of witty remarks and comments, especially to Jace causing them to have a rough start. She is also very caring and will get extremely worried when the people close to her are in danger, good examples are her mother, when Simon turned into a rat, and when Jace was kidnapped. Clary is also an artist, keeping a notepad with her to draw pictures, it’s the closest she lets herself have to a diary. “I should have told her about your habit of not doing what you’re told.”

Appearance Clary isn’t very proud in her appearance. She constantly compares herself to her mother, claiming to be the more childlike, less beautiful version of her. She states that while she and her mother both share the same body type, being slender with narrow hips, that’s when the similarities stop. She describes herself to have very curly carroty colored hair with bright and big green eyes, covered with a dust of freckles. She sometimes complains of her lack of breasts, but it wasn’t very frequent after the first part of the book. She is quite small, her height wavering over five feet, she complains constantly about her height. It is implied that she likes dressing in more boyish fashion, liking to wear t-shirts and sneakers. “ Add in a bunch of carroty colored hair, a dust of freckles and she was the Raggedy Ann to her mom’s Barbie doll.”

Motives

Clary’s motives are quite clear on the beginning; she just wanted her mother back and her life too if possible. She wanted to know more about her past and her mother’s past too, since the life that she had been living in seemed to be only a fake. She went to Magnus Bane to find answers on herself and the truth generally. As she got to know the shadowhunters and started building a deeper relationship with Jace, she wanted to know more about him too. In the end she just wanted to keep the ones she was close with same, which was pretty much her motives. “I don't want tea," said Clary, with muffled force. "I want to find my mother. And then I want to find out who took her in the first place, and I want to kill them."

Role Clary’s role as character is pretty much to help us be introduced to the whole shadowhunter world, since both her and us is new to the shadowhunter affairs and culture. She is a strong girl and her role is pretty much as the heroine of the story, alongside Jace who is the hero of the story, nonetheless the book is mostly on her side of view making her the protagonist.

Reaction Clary usually likes making sarcastic remarks when challenged. She likes using human world references to make her shadowhunter friends confused and has a very sarcastic sense of humor. She tends to go a bit more hurting in her comments when she is upset. She also panics a lot when she becomes worried, making many reckless decisions. Also when she has something important to say and she is not given a chance to speak she snaps quite easily. "JACE!" she interrupted him, her voice rising to a scream. "JUST SHUT UP FOR A SECOND AND LISTEN, WILL YOU?”
