I am a voluntary classroom assistant in a Primary school, mixed year group 1 and 2 class. The class does not have a paid teaching assistant and I am therefore fortunate with my involvement in the classroom. I work in partnership with the classroom teacher and student teacher in preparing and delivering learning activities. For example, I ensure that the correct children’s books are ready alongside any other learning resources required. Whilst the classroom teacher is teaching I ensure that the children are not distracted and are behaving in line with the golden rules. I sit with the children and quietly re focus them if required. I am responsible for various groups of children when they are doing their learning exercises. This includes ensuring they understand the work set, supporting them in completing set work and managing their behaviour. I also do 1 on 1 reading, whereby I take individual children to the library and give them my full attention with no distractions. I write in their reading log books and change their…

Be sensitive to children’s needs. Whether an individual or classroom assistant, it is important to be able to judge how much support to give while still encouraging children’s independence. Pupils need to be sure about what they have been asked to do and may need help organising their thoughts or strategies, but it is the learner who must do the work and not the assistant.…

As a teacher assistant, I do on-going observation of the students in the classroom; I gather information about many skills on a checklist. This includes writing, print awareness, language, and the purposeful use of materials. When I do observations, they include detailed notes so I can relate them more easily to many of the goals and objectives set for the children. I focus on about four children a day and spend about 15 minutes during rest time looking over my observations. I make sure the classroom is arranged so that there are interesting hands-on activities for all children. Also, I arrange space so that the children can navigate in and out of the space safely. I help choose activities that best meet all children’s abilities. Also, I participant in helping the children at mealtimes, I guide them washing their hands before and after each meal. I have the children assist in setting the tables, instruct them to keep all food and utensils on the placemats, and encourage them to use all utensils. I sit at the table with the children and model appropriate mealtime behavior. When I sit…

My main role within the classroom is supporting the teachers in any way they require. There are two classes each with thirty children with a very wide range of academic ability. I tend to work with the less able children therefore enabling the teachers to monitor the rest of the classroom. I carry out many other tasks to assist in the classroom. Having read chapter 1 Ten titles and roles (Hancock & Colloby, 2013, p3-p12) I could relate too many of the different roles. In the discussion and conclusion where eight main categories were mentioned I noted that I carry out four of the eight. Clerical and administrative duties – I photocopy, file and also mark the children’s math’s books. Health and safety – I over see the children having their snack and I also assist in the playground. Curriculum and learning support is one of the main tasks for me as I help with literacy, maths and phonics KU1.4. Finally servicing – I tidy up the classroom and set it up ready for the next lesson. I help to apply learning goals and objectives and then discuss with the teacher the progress of the…
