The Predule to the Afternoon of the Faunt, was about a Faun that woke up to adore the nymphs. He thought, they were not real because they were so perfect to be a reality. The Faun, was feeling lonely and the nymphs were the only women that he felt in company with. Debussy, began the opera with a flute melody, that evokes a peaceful environment. Further, he added more sounds such as horns, clarinets, and harp. These instruments, complemented the purpose of the work.
