There are dark green branches that cascade over the top of the bridge that are the background for half the painting. Slightly over half of the work is of the popular water lily pond that Claude Monet ever so often painted.
This Impressionist painting is done on canvas with oil paints. It was done with short, small strokes that were painted both vertically and horizontally. The water was painted vertically to create the image of the water reflecting, and the lilies are painted horizontal to make it seem as if they were floating on the water.The chosen colors are greens and blues for the outer part and are balanced off with white, purple, and pink. Monet moved to Giverny in 1883 and immediately began to develop the property behind his house into an intriguing garden and bridge which became one of his most popular landscapes to paint.He expanded a pond that was on his seven acre land , and then he soon started to develop the rest of the area. He encircled the lagoon with an active arrangement of flowers, trees, and bushes, and the next year filled it with water lilies. He added the Japanese-style wooden bridge in 1895, then a few years later started to paint the pond and its water lilies. His passion for gardening and landscape painting tied together
