Knife Gate Valves for Pulverized Fuel application
Standards applicable:NFPA 8503 – Standard for Pulverized Fuel Systems –1997 Edition – is Obsolete and consolidated in

NFPA 85 – Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code – 2001 Edition (NFPA 85 is consolidation of NFPA 8501,8502,8503,8504,8505 &8506) Clauses applicable for Knife Gate valves for pulverized fuel application in NFPA 85 :1.3.171 1.3.171.1 Valve Barrier Valve – A valve, not necessarily gas tight, used to inhibit hot gases from traveling back into any system component open for inspection or maintenance. Burner Shut-off valve – In a pulverized fuel system, a valve that is installed in the fuel line between the pulverizer and the Burner. Dust tight Valve – In a pulverized fuel system, a tight sealing valve installed in the fuel supply pipe to the burner to allow or stop flow. Vent Valve – a valve used to allow venting of air or gas from the system to the atmosphere. Pulverizer System Component Design Requirements All components of the pulverized fuel system as described below that are designed to be operated at no more than gauge pressure of 2psi(13.8 kPa) shall be designed to withstand an internal explosion gauge pressure of 50psi(344 kPa) for containment of possible explosion pressures. For operating gauge pressures in excess of 2 psi (13.8 kPa) the equipment as described below shall be designed to withstand an internal explosion pressure 3.4 times the absolute operating pressure.

Equipment design strength shall incorporate the combined stresses from Mechanical loading, operating, and explosion and implosion pressures plus an allowance for wear which shall be determined by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser. Some parts of the pulverized fuel system, such as large flat areas and sharp corners can be subjected to shock wave pressures. These pressures shall be included in the design, based on

First, let’s look at the probable direct causes of this incident. In my opinion the probable direct causes are the isolation of the pressure relief valve for the rupture disk replacement, and the blocking of the valve that isolates the ammonia pressure control valve from the heat exchanger. Although there was a lockout/tagout process in place based on the information in the report and my assumption, it was not completely followed. The blocking of a relief device would need to be documented and logged, and there is no information in the report that discusses this at all. This is a critical safety system and any maintenance that is to be performed on it must be done with very specific and deliberate means. Based on the information in the report, there was no evidence that the blocked relief device was ever returned to service. Another contributing factor to this was the work order process. Based on the information in the report the work order process was not always followed by operations or maintenance, and although there was a process by which signatures were to be obtained before and after work completion, there was no evidence that such signatures were obtained for this particular process. Additionally based on the information in the study, documentation for both lockout/tagout and work orders was not…

Explosive welding is a solid-phase process where welding is accomplished by accelerating one of the components which produces high velocity interactions of dissimilar metals by a controlled detonation. By doing this the resultant composite system is joined with a durable, metallurgical bond. This explosive process is commonly utilized to clad carbon steel plate with a thinner layer of corrosion resistant materials such as stainless steel, nickel, alloy, titanium, and zirconium. Geometries that are usually produced are plates, tubing, and tube sheets, these are simple geometries because they are very limited during this process. During this process an explosive has to be detonated on the surface of a metal which generates a high pressure pulse. The pulse propels the metal at an extremely high speed, if this piece of metal collides at any angle with another piece of metal, then welding will…

The Chicago School is known for its urban sociology and for developing Symbolic Interactionism approach. The Chicago School put a lot of attention to the human behavior, which would be determined by social structures and physical environmental factors than the genetic and personal characteristics. The Chicago School believed that the natural environment which the community inhabits is a major factor in shaping human behavior, and that the city functions as a microcosm for human interactions, relations and stability. The Chicago School was set up and worked at a very unique time in human social history: the establishment and the settlement of a major U.S city. Its main focus and reputation has been upon the premise and theory that it is not biology, genetics etc that determine human behaviour be rather responses to environment and situational circumstances.…
