A. Client Occupational Profile
Fatemah Al Ghanim is a 65-year-old female with a diagnosis of onset of lymphedema of her left arm and forearm. She used to be a physical education teacher since she loved playing sports and staying fit. Currently, she is taking calcium for bone loss due to post-cancer treatments, vitamin D for breast health, and fish oil to treat high cholesterol levels. Fatemah had been referred for an occupational therapy evaluation by her oncologist. She has recently moved in with her son and wife as she felt lonely after her husband passed away two years ago. An occupational profile is the first opportunity to meet, discuss, and analyze a client’s referral purposes. Also, as a practitioner we are able to document the client’s strengths, weaknesses, and current medications. The occupational profile gives an overall introduction to the client and allows the practitioner to begin developing therapy outcomes based on present conditions. The activity preparation is utilized to plan and develop a purposeful and meaningful activity related to limitations addressed in the occupational profile. Planning which varying weighted therapy balls, aquatic facility, and type of basketball hoop are all essential preparation components to provide a success environment and equipment for the client’s purposes. For example, when choosing an aquatic facility, it was important to pick a facility that was equipped for my client’s social, cognitive, and physical abilities. When implementing the activity, it is essential to incorporate the limitations addressed from the occupational profile and apply therapeutic activities or skills to increase overall occupational performance, therefore establishing positive occupational therapy outcomes for the client. To achieve positive occupational therapy outcomes, it is important for the client and practitioner to develop a therapeutic relationship with defined goals and purposes when completing individual activities. When working with a client with lymphedema, it is important to take into account her medications, limited function in the left upper extremities, precautions when working with lymphedema clients and goals to develop a therapy treatment plan that will enhance her quality of
