Cliff Steer Reflection
The two speakers for this week were Dr. Craig Packer and Dr. Cliff Steer. Dr. Craig is a professor of the Ecology, Evolution, and behavior department and is also the director of the lion research department. I take the environmental science class, BIOL 1055 with the lab, so I've heard of his research before. I've learned a little bit about his research group and done research experiments using their Serengeti snapshot photos that he has mentioned. I find it interesting how there’s a correlation between the two class. Other than the correlation of the two class, I find his presentation and research interesting. I never knew that there was a difference in the lion's’ mane of the male, I didn’t know what it means or what it symbolizes. However I now know what it is used for, and I find it fascinating. I was really interested in how he talks, he made his presentation enjoyable and entertaining, making the listener or viewer wanting to learn more.

Dr. Cliff Steer is in the Department of medicines and genetics, cell biology and development and is also associated with the medical school at the University of Minnesota. I am grateful to know someone that is associated with the medical school of the

Growing up, I’ve always wanted to dance, I’ve dance when I was little for about a year and that was it. And through dancing, I’ve grown to also love to learn how to do little “tricks” with my body. However, I was not able to do much with this interest or passion because of limited opportunities. Now that I am in college, I feel freer and more independent. I am currently signed up to perform a traditional dance with HMSA for their heritage event and is also participating in the gymnastics club. However, college is hard and requires a lot of my time so that has also limited my commitment and to the club, and participation. Despite that, I am glad that I found something that I love and can do in the

I would recommend Dr. Gothamie Weerakoon for future classes. She is a very inspirational person who has done interesting research on an organism most people never heard of. She mentioned the importance of protecting rainforest and how global warming is real issue. She was funny and did an excellent job teaching the class about lichen and her other research. Overall, I liked her presentation and recommend her for future BCQ…

Unlike Sidney, I did not choose to leave my education to accomplish my dreams. Even as a young dancer with the passion for succeeding as a professional, my parent’s expectation of me attaining a decent education and stable job drove my decisions. Which ultimately ended in the ceasing of pursuing my dancing…

I can't dance. Most of the time, I shy away from dancing. But surprisingly, I have a picture of students giving a dance performance at Grinnell. A simple picture with enthusiastic dancers that I received during a college talk captures what I want out of college: a place where I can let go of my inhibitions and find fulfillment in anything that strikes my fancy, somewhere I can immerse myself in the multitude of opportunities and activities available and experience the magic captured by that picture.…

When I was in junior high, I joined the dance team. You can say that dancing is definitely one of my talents. I love dancing, but I have never really thought of making it into a career. While I was in dance, I learned responsibility and dependability. I managed my schedule, so that I would not be late to practices or events. I was always on time and prepared.…

Ever since I was a little girl I dreamt about being on the Indianettes dance team. Dancing has been a part of my life from the age of four up until now. When I was younger I was not the best dancer but I loved it, and my mom already paid for my classes so i was kind of stuck doing it anyways. My eighth grade year I was preparing to tryout for the Indianettes, I was stretching, working on my technique, and working on my jumps and turns. It turns out that the old coach Sheri Bradley quit and the Indianettes had a new fairly inexperienced coach named MariAnn Barfus. I wasn't very confident about making the team. Long story short, I ended up making it along with Jaidyn Harris, Hannah Hyde, Daphnie Colpron, Carson Davis, Becca Osterhout, Mechelle…

Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. This was about a year after I moved to Kansas City and when I just started going to the Kansas City Ballet. The whole experience changed my point of view completely over not just dance but ballet to. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for moving to KCB.…

Over the many years these activities have been a part of it, music and dance have influenced my life in a positive way. Both type of arts are very demanding. They require long hours of practice a day, which teaches you a lot of about perseverance, and time management. Music and dance have also given me opportunities for community service. The Orange County Ballet Theatre puts on The Nutcracker every December. After it ends, we dance for three separate nursing homes, which is always a pleasure for the residents. The Advanced Dance Company at NFA does community events as well including, two separate trips to Fostertown to dance and help out with the younger elementary students and hosting a dance benefit to raise money for a young girl with medical problems. In addition to this, I altar serve at my church on Sundays, teach oboe lessons at GAMS, and have attended two separate science fairs for volunteer work. I am currently Vice President of Wind Ensemble, and plan to be president of Music Council next year, as well as a senator for the Senior Class.…

When I turned three, my mom signed me up for my first ballet class, and I loved it. Moving along to the music brought me joy and fulfillment. My liking for it has gradually grown into a passion. But over the years, I have also noticed a stigma for extreme competitiveness and perfectionism. Something that originally began as a form of worship has transformed into a celebration of the superficial and frivolous. Dancing often creates many concerns for young performers.…

Tennis and marching band are two extracurricular activities that require both dedication and commitment. Prior to entering my first year of high school, I decided that I wanted to take my love for tennis to the next level and make the O’Fallon high school tennis team. In 5th grade, I committed myself to playing the alto saxophone in the school band and all that entails with lessons and practice, with an eye on playing in the high school marching band. During high school, I made a commitment to participate in the Rose Bowl Parade in California. After making that decision, I found out I made the tennis team. Practicing both these activities in the summer and playing during the fall semester put me at odds with my parents on what should come first tennis or band. The amount of time needed for both activities to succeed was monumental and would be an uphill battle compared to the actual time I had. This caused internal conflict knowing that one will not get as much attention as the other. At that moment, I decided to come up with a solution to my problem then put it into action. One way or another I had developed two answers. I realized to become good at band and tennis something had to change.…

Once I entered high school I took another path in the world of dance, I had decided to try out for the stepping team while taking dance classes at the school. Stepping was a huge transformation from cheerleading for me, it requires a lot more stamina. With liturgical dancing, jazz, modern dance, hip hop, cheerleading, and stepping under my belt, I hope that the skills I have obtain will be a big help to me in the dance world. When I heard that I could be eligible to participate in the Cooperative Career Education program within the Academy for Professional Studies I knew I had to jump at the chance. I feel this program is an excellent fit for me because it gives me more time to be at home with my son. I am a teen mom who goes to school during the day and works at night. While I am working or at school my mom watches my son. My mom had took a leave of absence from her job so that she can take care of my son while I work on finishing my education. My mom has been my biggest supporter throughout this whole year so for me to get a chance to partake in this program would relieve a lot of stress from her and it will definitely…

From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.…
