What are Strengths? This question is one that I did not have the answer to or even respond. When classes started, I knew that everyone had strengths, but I never knew how to go about and find what makes me unique out of seven billion people in the world. When I first took the Clifton Strengths Quest, my mind was pondering how a test that has strongly agree on one end and strongly agree on the other end would produce my five themes. Then as I was reading the results, it was surprisingly accurate with my personality. My five results were Achiever, Intellection, realtor, learner, and input. Reading the description for each word made me reflect on how I was using these five themes in my current life. I have many strengths as well as areas to grow in, some of them overlap as both a strength and an area of growth. One of my strengths is trying hard to get any job put in front of me done no matter what it may be. Another is the inability to say no to anything someone asks me to do such as pick up a shift at work or can you help them at home. This one is as much an area of growth as it is a strength. Some areas of growth that I am focusing on improving include being more patient and not speaking too much.…

This book review is on Strengths Finder 2.0. Written by Tom Rath, this book follows and elaborates on Donald Clifton's Strength Finder assessment created in 1998. Strength Finder 2.0 looks to dispel the outdated belief that only weaknesses need to be improved upon. The textbook Psychology Applied to Work describes this concept as positive psychology, "The aim of positive psychology is to shift the emphasis away from what is wrong with people to what is right with people" (Muchinsky & Culberson, pg. 384, 2016). With that premise on its head, Strengths Finder 2.0 looks to first identify the strengths of others and directs them to improve on what they already do so well. Even though the text can be applied practically, the book really focuses…

According to the Clifton StrengthsQuest assessment my top five themes are: Responsibility, Achiever, Learner, Focus, and Connectedness (Gallup, 2017). I’ve always been able to identify with the Learner theme. The Learner theme describes the energy and excitement in growing from inability to proficiency, as the most exciting thing about starting a project. Sometimes, when learning is the objective, it barely matters the actual venture or end goal, it is about the development. I’ve often used the idiom; “A jack of all trades, a master of none”, to define my deep desire to absorb all types of skills and material.…
