changing their maladaptive behaviors (Corey, 1991).
Licensure. Capella Universities accreditation through the council for accreditation of counseling and related educational programs (CACREP), means that acquiring a professional license in counseling in Washington State, after the required 60 semester hours of graduate level training, will be obtainable (Washington State Department of Health, n.d.). The importance of obtaining proper licensure in a counselors practicing state is to protect both the client and counselor (Corey, 1991). This is because licensed mental health practices must follow nationally set of standards (Washington State, n.d.), called a code of ethics (Corey, 1991).” Belmont’s report outlines these ethical guidelines as the principle of respect for person, the principle of beneficence, and the principle of justice” (Morling, 2015 91-92). These outlined code of conduct for licensed mental health counselors, protects a counselor by setting the guidelines in which to follow (Corey 1991), and protects the client by ensuring that their physically, mental and emotional needs are not exploited. (Morling 2015). Licensure to practice mental health counseling is important, for the above mentioned reasons.
Career goals. As a graduate of the program, my plans are to work with children struggling with Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Using techniques garnered through my graduate studies, I will use behavioral analysis, to implement incremental changes in the lives of these children. Helping children with ADHD, to learn to live with this disorder, by teaching coping techniques. By obtaining a graduate degree through Harold Abel School of social and behavioral sciences, I can obtain my career goal.
Substantive reasoning.
My rationale for applying to a graduate program in mental health counseling is due to my personal experiences of watching my own son struggle with the symptoms of ADHD. The stigma and misinformation about the subject in the public, can be altered by providing educational seminars about the disorder. By helping to educate the public on ADHD symptoms and coping mechanisms, stigmatism may be reduce producing a more understanding public for my own son, and for others struggling with this disorder. My goal as a mental health counselor is to help children struggling with their disorder, and to educate the larger population about
ADHD.
