The book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, is about a boy named Brian who lives in New York. One day he is sent to visit his dad in the summer on a one passenger plane. On his way there, he suddenly realizes that the pilot is having a heart-attack. So Brian does what he thinks he should do and crash lands the plane in the middle of a lake. So from then on into the book, Brian is stranded in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a hatchet he had gotten from his mother a few years back.…
Another critic named George L. Cowgill, a professor at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, argued that Leon-Portilla’s use of sources mostly came from Sahagun’s Codex Florentino and other numerous native sources that fit well to create the Aztec account of the conquest of Mexico. Cowgill felt that Leon-Portilla’s book did a successful job in achieving its purpose of telling the story through the account of the natives and the overall story seemed to flow very well as a narrative. Cowgill felt Portilla’s book was a “convincing and moving presentation” of how the indigenous population and their descendants had to say about their cultural downfall. Leon-Portilla made the reader think of how the natives felt and what they endured with his vivid…
The article, Guns, Germs and Steel, written by Jared Diamond, is an argument about how and why things happened differently in history in different continents. It’s about looking deeper into why things happened the way they did. Why did western Eurasian societies become more powerful? What enabled these parts of the world to develop more quickly and in turn be able to conquer less developed societies around the world? The important message to grasp from this article is not about how certain continents or areas becoming developed quicker, but why those specific areas were the ones to develop quicker. An example of this that Diamond discusses, is how New Guineans were still living in the “Stone Age” 200 years ago when Europeans came to New Guinea with materials (called cargo) that were very valued. The question was, why did the people of New Guinea have a scarce amount of cargo when the white Europeans had so much of it? (page 14)…
‘Moving into the world involves different pathways to new experiences’ could be interpreted in many different ways. In The Story of Tom Brennan by JC Burke, Tom experiences different emotions and situations as he attempts to move into the world when his brother Daniel is involved in a tragic car accident. The image by Image Zoo also shows four different pathways leading into the one tree with branches that lead up into the sky. This picture shows the tree of life and how people can take different paths to experiences. I Measure Every Greif I Meet is a poem by Emily Dickinson that shows the strength a person needs to overcome grief in their lives. The strength comes within the individual and their surroundings. All three of these texts show that moving into the world involves different pathways to new experiences shown through different circumstances, problems and views.…
A character’s past is important in any work; whether it be a play, a movie, or a novel, the past is often influential in many ways. It shaped the characters into who they are now, whether that be a good or bad thing. Often something from the past often fuels them to a future goal. In The Bone People by Keri Hulme, the past plays a major part in Kerewin Holmes life, how she feels about it, and how she looks back on it plays a better part of the novel.…
Have you ever encountered a life changing experience, that impacted you or your life? In this interpretation people have experienced it, like from Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, I Never Had It Made by Jackie Robinson, and ¨The Father Of Chinese Aviation¨ by Rebecca Maksel, which includes Feng Ru. They all faced life changing experiences in trying to impact their country, or society. Melba Pattillo Beals one of the first African Americans to integrate in an all white high school, Jackie Robinson the first black player to play in the Major Leagues, and Feng Ru the Father of Chinese Aviation, all faced turning points with vitality and made a noble impact on their lives and their society. In addition they all faced life changing experiences, but in doing so they impacted their society.…
I remember when I first experienced goosebumps raise on my arms and send a shiver through my body, simply because the words leaving the speaker's lips left such an imprint on me. I didn’t think that a simple sentence could bring tears to my eyes, could cause me to react in any physical way. I didn’t even know the author. Yet, it still amazes me anytime I react to such a poem. The emotions that the author pours into every word and every syllable is astounding. Each pause and breath tell a story on their own. I knew that I had to try. I wanted to make people feel the way like I did when I first heard them, but because it was my words that made them react.…
Your novella, Anthem, was a real perception-onset for me. It made me apprehend that it is not always bad to oppose with what other people consider. The novella also made me understand that if you don’t consider what others do you will probably get resolved for it, but you just have to stay robust through the hard times. Life is hard and it is seldom not fair. It can hurt sometimes, but if you focus on what is within your power to change for the better, you can and you will. If you have confidence in what you believe you can get through even the toughest times, although it will not be simple, you can get through it as long as you stay strong.…
How does a person find their true self? Do they find it through their friends and family; or do they just expect to know? Some may think that it can only be found through life changing incidents. However, that is not always the case. Simple events can make a profound impact on an individual’s life, leading them to discover their true identity. Throughout the poem, this is shown through the speaker’s perception of the stranger, how he makes her feel, and how he influences her life.…
As life goes on, humans will live on. Along with life comes the struggles of dealing with everyday events. These events can evoke emotions that one may not realize were there initially. The way that one deals with emotions varies between people, but on general rule of thumb, most people would rather deal with their emotions alone. Some will go down the more artistic path of expressing emotions, through poetry. Poetry can be used to illustrate a person's emotions without them openly writing about emotions. In Mary Oliver’s poem “The Journey”, she expresses the idea that every human being breaks. Being broken could mean many things, and it’s up to the reader of Oliver’s poem to decide. The poem is written so that the reader is in the point of view, creating an atmosphere in which the reader connects with the poem. Oliver conveys the idea that emotions only control people to a certain point through denotation and personification.…
Literature about a person’s experience should be a detailed description of the writer’s emotions. It should tell the reader how the writers feels from what they see and do. Matsuo Basho wrote a journal about his five month journey exploring the Northeast of China. It is called, “From the Narrow Road to the Deep North”. In his journal Matsuo Basho described how he feels along the way. Basho describes what he sees along the way through many haikus in his journal. His writing helps the reader understand what it was like to go on this journey, and witness all the beauty that was around him.…
Dorothy Livesay's poem "Experience" teaches that if one learns solely from outside sources, then one will never know what it is to feel independence and self-growth. By examining the authors personal experiences, the imagery, and the symbolism used the above statement will be proven true.…
Everyone has experienced experiences in their own way. Everyone comes from different “little worlds”. Everyone is raised differently. Some may have the best education around, but some may not have had the chances to experience it. Some people were born into money, but some have to work their life off. Everyone is capable of doing something completely different from you.…
I am describing Sandcastle by Jackie Schill and Joseph Szewczyk. This graphic text focuses on a blind woman applying her make up after which she went to pay a visit to some helpless children who were been displaced as a result of war crisis. After visiting these kids, she then went to a super market and buy some stuffs and later paid the bills at the cashier desk. After that, she then took her car and went home bypassing two people on her way home. Upon arrival home, she met her daughter in the bathroom staring at the mirror after using her mothers makeup. Her mother then became angry, went back into her car and drove off which she then had accident and died. After her demise, the husband felt sad and was always thinking of his wife. He then…
