September 22 marked the first day of the season of pumpkin spice, commonly known as fall. To many white girls around the country, this is the best time of year, because during this time, society has once again deemed sweaters, pumpkin spice beverages, and unnecessary photos and decorations socially acceptable. Personally, although I do enjoy wearing cozy sweaters, the other common “joys” of fall disgust me. Basically, I find New England’s reaction to fall quite Katastrophic.…
Mexico has assimilated the American version of Halloween into their culture, while still keeping Día de Los Muertos traditions alive. Individuals refer to it to as Día de Las Brujas or “Night of the Witches”. The fete has different layers of meaning depending on social status. Those with a higher social standing buy into the commercialization by purchasing costumes, decorating lavishly, and attending parties or parades. Brandes states in “The Day of the Dead, Halloween, and the Quest for Mexican National Identity” that “Unlike in the United States, I have rarely seen a Mexican adult wear a costume-or even a portion of a costume” (372). Children are the target audience rather than adults. The poorer classes see Día de Las Brujas as a profitable…
In Amy Tan’s Fish Cheeks, published in a 1987 issue of Seventeen Magazine, Tan wishes to let her audience know that it is okay to want to be different, but always hold on to who you were before as well. Ms. Tan drew in the audience by beginning her story with the common line about love. She made things interesting by tell us that her crush was set to join her at Christmas Eve. She went on to explain that her Chinese cultural family was an embarrassment to her. When her crush got to her house, she avoided him and anyway that she could embarrass herself. It didn’t take long for her family to step right up and embarrass her however. Soon after dinner, the minister and his family left and Tan was given a gift by her mother. Her mother warned her that it is okay to want to look different, thus the gift of a mini skirt, but her mother also warned her that she should never be ashamed of where she came from.…

Tim Burton’s adds lots of diversion to the film Corpse Bride including the use of characters through the use of outfits and music. These qualities help to make certain characters stand out in the movie. For example, Emily is a ghost and is dead. She stands out because she is way different from the other characters as well. Emily’s outfits are different for the sake that she is dad and you can see her bones through her dress. (since she is dead) Also, she has neon bright colors on her while everything else is low key lighting. This draws the audience’s eyes to Emily because she is way different than everyone else in the movie and comes from somewhere else. To add to the outfits, the music also plays a role in representing Emily. Whenever the…

Likewise, more stereotypes are added to the list of denigration of African Americans, the most famous among those stereotypes is the ‘bad girl’. The African American woman is considered sexually promiscuous with an insatiable horniness. These demeaning stereotypes taking roots from the slavery era whereas slaveholders conveyed this assumption to justify their rape crimes, they assumed that African American women should not be considered as victims because they always have the desire for sex. Along these lines, the stereotype becomes prominent in movies whereas the African American woman is depicted as the over-sexual woman who is loved only for her hot…
I believe people dress up on Halloween as stereotype of someone else culture because they want to be unique and fun at the same time. I do believe that it is racist because I do not think they take the time to know about the culture and what has happen to the culture in the past. In their heads they just think “Oh this is going to be a fun costume this year” and dress up not thinking it is going to offend anyone. Or they do know it is going to offend but they still do it because they do not care.…
Over the course of this class, we learned that the characteristics that define a person are constructed by society. However, the people that do not abide by these standards are discriminated and oppressed. In America, these certain people are oblivious to their privilege and treat people whom are different from them poorly. In the critically acclaimed play, “The Beast of Times”, Adelina Anthony uses animals to reflect the beast like characters in society to represent how patriarchy, homophobia, nativism, and classism are effecting communities. Anthony uses these topics that make people of privilege uncomfortable by utilizing comic reliefs to show significance of the issue and how to change it. From the play I learned how I could use my…
Fashion has always crossed boundaries, in the case of cultural appropriation has it gone too far? Although cultural appropriation can sound like a simple concept at first such as Chinese food adapting into American culture, it’s not that simple. Cultural appropriation can make people stereotype one another and stigmatise their culture, which often leads to cause people of the original culture or religion to find it disrespectful and offensive.…
“Taking a Bite out of twilight”, written by Carmen D. Siering and “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor”, written by bell Hooks, are both affected negatively by the media. In Siering’s essay, she talks about how Bella, the main character in the Twilight series, is portrayed as an antifeminist character, which sends a bad message to young readers about the characterization of a woman. In Hooks’ essay, she emphasizes how the poor people in our society are looked down upon by our society.…
Dead guys don’t come back to eat people.”. Basically, the comment is saying that Halloween is not meant to be taken seriously and nobody should be offended. . Admittedly, I believe that Halloween should be a time where everyone can enjoy themselves and have fun. Though, that all changes when someone is insulted, and I believe some costumes should be taken seriously. Jelani Cobb agrees when he explains “I think it’s almost impossible to be ironic while being racist, so the irony is lost,”. Cobb’s educated point is that it is hard for something to be humorous when it is so offensive to people. I can agree with Cobb due to the fact that I do not believe insulting people’s ethnicities is funny. Cobb explains further, “It suggests that people conflate the actual broad diversity of a culture with caricatures and characters.”. In other words, Cobb is saying that cultures are too complex and various to be combined into a single stereotype or costume. This opinion is an idea I also agree with. Cultures are so deep and complicated, and I truly think it is offensive when people create stereotypes about someone’s identity. In my opinion, I feel that this…
The thesis of this paper argues that The Little Mermaid presents themes of sexual objectification among the women by the male characers’ imposed hypermasculinity. This is to emphasize that this film, along with other Disney films presents traditional idealisms that inflicts strict gender roles and biases into its young, developing audience’s minds. As an academic paper, it was crucial that the conversation remain forma and its primary and secondary sources are scholarly, to legitimize the claims and the arguments being made. However the purpose of this paper aims at consciously engaging and exploring its readers’ mindset about female deamination. Therefore the rhetoric utilizes scholarly conversations to actively engage the reader, as well. Meanwhile, the tone clearly and confidently echos each claim, providing support and strength, as well as asserting legitimate authority. With the combination and the interworking of each of the courses, this paper has potential to not only adhere but also over substantiate the expectations of this assignment. Nevertheless, according to the reviews of the paper as a drafted whole, its thesis’s arguments need to be narrowed in order to avoid overgeneralizing and extending the length of this 15 page assignment. Better organization and placement of each argument within its context has been advised to improve upon this developing work.…
Part of the history of Halloween is costumes. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays goes back to the Middle Ages.Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of “souling,” when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November…
Traditional costumes are peculiar to or characteristic of a certain nation or ethnic group, which usually retains strong elements of the culture from which it originates. In areas where contemporary Western fashions have become usual, traditional costumes are often worn in connection with special events and celebrations, particularly those connected with cultural traditions, heritage, or pride. Some countries even have their traditional costumes as the uniform of the national airline stewardesses to promote their culture to passengers.…
