At the old days, in the business world, making profit is the most important issue. But now in the 21st century, corporate governance is a important issue to the society. Among those factors inside corporate governance, we would like to focus on one of the essential factor - corporate social responsibilities. In this project, we would use CLP Holdings Ltd (CLP) to be the example to discuss corporate social responsibilities of power sector in Hong Kong.
CLP Holdings Ltd., a company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, is one of the largest investor-owned power businesses in the Asia-Pacific region. Through CLP Power Hong Kong, They operate a vertically-integrated electricity supply business providing a highly-reliable supply of electricity to 80% of Hong Kong’s population. CLP is committed to helping staff to maintain that balance, through reasonable contractual working hours and vacation entitlements, monitoring overtime to ensure that it is not excessive, and introducing flexible working hours where practicable in their idea of work-life balance. CLP have organize social, recreational and sports activities to provide after-work relaxation for employees and their families In Hong Kong, Australia and India, CLP offer confidential Employee Assistance Program with professional counseling service to help employees address personal or work-related concerns.
Those above activities are some of the example of corporate social responsibilities (CSR). These are mainly focus on the Society side of CSR. In its 2007 International Good Practice Guidance, "Defining and Developing an Effective Code of Conduct for Organizations", the International Federation of Accountants provided the following working definition:
"Principles, values, standards, or rules of behavior that guide the decisions, procedures and systems of an organization in a way that (a) contributes to the welfare of its key stakeholders, and (b) respects the rights of all
