coach Kent has taught me in the past year. Coach Kent’s class is one of a kind.
Likely because Coach Kent does not use ordinary methods of teaching. His methods are much more effective than an average teacher. I never know what to expect when his class begins. It is a class that reminds me anything is possible and the best memories we make are the ones we least expect. An average day starts by playing toss across, categories, betting on horse races, or doing finger aerobics. All of these were strategic ways to keep the class involved and entertained, as coach Kent always says what appeals to kindergarteners’ appeals to a senior in high school. The class would continue on with us making a drill noise as he announces we will be doing a drill next. I loathed doing drills, but there is no denying I am a better writer because of them. If we didn’t work on a writing drill we would watch a video. After we finished our video our class could be found in the library writing one of many papers that we write throughout the year. Kent’s fourth period class has many memorable moments. One of which is the day we took a field trip to the Elvis tree. This is a tree decorated in Elvis Presley memorabilia. What is special about this tree is how excited Coach Kent gets when taking students there. He is as giddy as a second grader receiving a life size teddy bear. Another memorable moment was the annual Easter egg hunt. I had been waiting since my freshman year for the egg hunt and it did not disappoint. The excitement in the room was
electric as we all awaited the hunt. I am fortunate to have had Coach Kent as a teacher outside of the classroom. When Preston and I co-directed search 336 Coach Kent was the dad. Search dads are people who have a lot of wisdom and compassion that they are willing to share amongst searchers as they journey through the search weekend. They are the father figure of the entire weekend. Coach Kent brought our search together. He led the service crew in creating the best skit of all time! He also gave an unforgettable talk about marriage with his lovely wife. My favorite memory of this weekend was on Saturday night during the trust walks when Rob, Coach Kent and I were standing waiting for our que to get the next group. While we were waiting we got to talking about my future plans to be a teacher and Coach Kent appraised my decision and gave tremendous advice. It was a very cool experience to get to know Coach Kent as not only a teacher, but also as a faithful disciple of Christ. Coach Kent is someone I am fortunate to have had as a teacher and spiritual role model. There are not enough teachers like Coach Kent in the world. Thank You Coach Kent for sharing your guidance and helping me become a better writer.
