The Coast Guard protects the public, the environment, and U.S. economic interests in the nation’s ports, on its waterways, along the coast, on international waters, or in any maritime region as required to support national security. The Coast Guard has always played key roles in the protection of the U.S. homeland and has been entrusted with five fundamental missions: Maritime Security, National Defense, Maritime Safety, Protection of Natural Resources, and Maritime Mobility (Coast 15). The maritime security goals of the Coast Guard include reducing America's vulnerability to terrorism by preventing waterborne terrorist attacks; securing maritime borders by halting the flow of illegal aliens and contraband; preventing violations of our exclusive economic zone; and suppressing maritime violations of federal law.

“Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist attacks…This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.” President George W. Bush spoke these and other words to the United States of America and the world immediately after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Roughly one year after this appalling attack the Homeland Security Act of 2002 established the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), bringing together 22 separate federal agencies, primarily to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States (About, 2012).…

The Department of Homeland Security was created after the attacks and its stated missions involve anti-terrorism, border security, immigration and customs, cyber security, and disaster prevention and management. Arguably the event that transpired on the 9th of September 2001 transformed the lives of Americans completely. The days when Americans flew in planes without any threat of terrorism on US soil are long gone. In fact, terrorism has become a common vocabulary that most third graders are familiar with it. They may not comprehend what the word means, but they are aware of it and understand that it is not something pleasant. Fifteen years after the event of 9/11, Americans are not yet safe, but elaborate border security measures have been put in place to secure the US homeland (U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, n.d).…

One of the events prior to 9/11 that I believe also significantly contributed to shaping homeland security in the present was the Cold War. The differences between the Cold War and the War on Terror were of course the time, the place, and the people who were involved but the main difference were the cause of each war. The U.S. got involved with Korea and Vietnam because the US wanted to stop the spread of communism coming from countries like the U.S.S.R. The US declared war against Afghanistan because of terrorist actions of 9/11 to stop the spread of terrorism in the future. Reasons like these are what shaped the homeland security program, Americans fear that there are people out there who will directly and/or indirectly harm this country.…

The United States Secretary of Homeland Security is the head of the United States Department of Homeland Security, the body concerned with protecting the U.S. and the safety of U.S. citizens. The secretary is a member of the President's Cabinet. The position was created by the Homeland Security Act following the attacks of September 11, 2001. The new department consisted primarily of components transferred from other cabinet departments because of their role in homeland security, such as the Coast Guard, Federal Protective Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (which includes the Border Patrol), Secret Service, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It did not, however, include the FBI or the CIA.[1]…
