“The mines of upper Bolivia, particularly the mines around Pelosi, strain the limits of human endurance. they are so high and the oxygen content inside the labyrinth of small passages drops so low that the work is almost too strenuous even for the Indians already accustomed to hard labor at high altitudes. the conquistadors, however, found that the miners worked much longer and harder if they chewed the coca leaves. Not only could the men work with less oxygen but they could work longer hours with less food” (199). This quote simply displays a disgusting example of the economic cycle that the Americans had begun. The cycle basically began with workers chewing coca leaves, creating demand for higher production of coca leaves with produced higher amounts of workers at coca plantations, making Pelosi the world’s largest consumer of coca. The act of the workers chewing the coca could make them last much longer in the mines to get more work done. This made the rate of death in the mines…

I think that the office manager in this case is being very selfish. There is no doubt that the dentist is having some issues with alcohol abuse. The ADA code of ethics states that is unethical for a dentist to practice while abusing alcohol or other controlled substances that can impair its ability to perform. It also states that we have the ethical obligation to help colleagues to seek treatment when needed. As dental professionals, we are ethically responsible to report any evidence of impaired colleagues to the professional assistance committee of a dental society. I think that Lesa shouldn’t ignore it, or as the manager suggest cover him up. She should try to talk to him about her concern for his wellbeing. He needs professional help before…

Unjust punishments can occur because of sentencing disparities and wrongful convictions. Current prison populations show a higher population of African Americans and Hispanic men leading some to believe that a sentencing disparities caused by racial prejudices and discrimination are the causes. Sentencing disparities occur when offenders with similar criminal histories who have committed the same offense receive much different penalties. Data has shown that Hispanics and African Americans have received harsher punishments compared to whites for similar crimes. Wrongful convictions occur when an innocent person is found guilty by either plea or verdict. The development of DNA testing has increased the number of people convicted by juries and later exonerated by science. A large portion of FARC’s profits now come from drug trafficking; however, they weren’t major drug traffickers when Plan Colombia was first implemented. Peter Dale Scott, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and author of several books on this topic, noted that the Colombian government estimated in 2001 that paramilitary groups controlled 40% of the cocaine exports; whereas the FARC controlled only 2.5%. The FARC had been more involved in the “taxing” of the drug trade, but they have since significantly increased their role in production by forcing farmers to grow cocaine. Economics and geopolitics are the clear reasons why the U.S. government implemented such a flawed drug policy which targets the FARC while turning a blind eye to the attacks committed by right-wing paramilitary groups.…
