The Fashion Icon: Coco Chanel
Gabriel Bonheur Chanel known to many as Coco Chanel was born August 19, 1882, in Saumur, France was a fashion icon of the twentieth century (“Coco Chanel”). Gabriel Chanel was raised by nuns because she was an orphaned at a very young age, where she learned the seamstress trade. She wanted to be a singer and she would perform at local café concerts. Her audience eventually gave her the name Coco because the songs that she would perform would have the name Coco in it and the name eventually followed her throughout her career. Chanel eventually put her singing career aside, so that she could pursue her real passion of fashion. She would become very famous because of her simplicity in her designs, while remaining very classy and elegant. Coco Chanel was a leader in the fashion world and always kept women in mind and expressed her femininity throughout her work. Her designs had a big influence in the mid 20th century; she was able to inspire women with a new concept while expressing her own style and femininity.

A lot of people believed that she became successful in her business by chance and not because she actually knew how to run and handle a business. “She learned her business through experience, and it is often said that her genius lay in her ability to absorb details, if not the necessary skills to accomplish them himself – she soon came to know who could provide these skills and how to get the best out of them for her own purpose” (De La Haye 26).
