Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, scope and limitations of the study, theoretical and conceptual framework, and the definition of terms.
Background of the Study Chrysanthemum is one of the most popular flowers grown in our country for its diversified beauty of colors, shapes, shades and keeping quality (AgriInfo, 2011). It is one of the plants that help the economy flourish. Local markets in the Philippines have supplies of the flower. Although cut flowers, especially Chrysanthemum are grown throughout the Philippines, the industry still suffers the lack of supplies during Valentine's Day, All Saints’ Day, School Graduation, May Flower Festivals and Yuletide Seasons.
Chrysanthemum is one of the most important and marketable cut flowers in the world. However, a relatively limited vase life reduces its marketability (Mashhadian et al 2012). Hence, large amount of money can be saved from foreign exchange by stepping up the production of the cut flowers within the country. One of the solutions in increasing the chrysanthemum’s marketability is to extend its vase life although this cut flower has a vase life of 7 to 14 days only. Several chemical treatments were used by flower growers to extend the vase life of some cut flowers to maintain the freshness of the flowers so that it can be exported to other country. One is applying with 1- Methylcyclopropane, but it was expensive. Analysis showed that Coconut water contains cytokinins that have been discovered to have properties such as exhibiting growth regulation, development and aging.
