Why I Choose Pharmacy, retrieved on 7th July 2008 from
I am writing to express my strong interest in the PGY1 residency program at Centura St. Anthony Hospital. Throughout my pharmacy experience, I developed a passion for education and inpatient healthcare. Pursing a residency allows me to merge these two interests. During my critical care rotation at your facility, the pharmacists provided exceptional care to patients while upholding the values of compassion, integrity, and excellence. These core values resonated with my own and I was drawn to your institution. The PGY1 residency program at Centura St. Anthony Hospital has everything I desire. It is based at a level I trauma center which brings the challenge of a diverse patient population. Additionally, experiences that captivate my interest such as cardiology, critical care, and education are offered. The opportunities afforded by your program will facilitate my long-term career goals. I aspire to expand my clinical skills, enhance the pharmacy profession by precepting/teaching students, and possibly pursue a PGY2 residency.…
Typically, the career of pharmacists is concentrated on the correct and proper interpretation of prescriptions and the dispensing of products as prescribed (FDA, 2009). They represent as the final check and approval of a pharmaceutical product before it leaves the pharmacy and delivered to the patient for their use. While it is common that the place of work of pharmacists is in a hospital setting many pharmacists offer their practices as clinicians, wellness and health promotion professionals in a community health, as industrial pharmacist, consultants, post-secondary teachers, and owning and running their own pharmacy chains. Whether the practice of pharmacists is private or public their duty continues to focus on the well-being of their patients through correct prescriptions.…
After completing the pharmacy residency IPPE, I feel like I have a much better understanding of how residency training is structured and how it can benefit me as a pharmacist. Visiting the hospital was helpful because it allowed us to talk with a variety of both PGY1 and PGY2 residents about not only the academic aspects of residency but also the more practical concerns such as finances and family balance. I felt that these conversations were both enlightening and comforting.…
I have been a pharmacy technician for three years. As a pharmacy technician, I have many responsibilities, including accurately typing and filling prescriptions. I answer phone calls, call doctor’s offices to clarify questions about prescriptions, and call insurance companies to get prescription approval. Additionally, when filling prescriptions I use pharmacy math and conversions to calculate day supplies and dosing. I greet customers as they arrive to drop off prescriptions and as they are checked out at the register. In this capacity, patient privacy and customer service are top priorities. I enjoy working as a pharmacy technician because it allows me to help the people of my community, while also allowing me to apply and expand upon my…
I discovered that I was not going to drown in ignorance and helplessness any longer. Instead, I wanted to understand more about the disease and I was not about to stand idly and watch my mother struggle. I explored on the internet, paid visits to the library, took extra classes at school, and ultimately strived to attain the confidence that comes only with knowledge. I pursued the causes and effects of diabetes, and offered the emotional support that my mother’s physician could not provide. Now, I work together with my mother to create healthy and balanced diet plans for not only my brother and father, but also my aging grandparents and…
In terms of medical professionals, Pharmacy Technicians’ roles have been developing at a fast pace since the very start of the occupation. “As the physician’s role changed from distributing drugs to diagnosing disease and performing surgery, the role of the pharmacist emerged. The first pharmacy school opened in 1821 at the college of pharmacy and Sciences in Philadelphia” (Mosby 10-11). That school is now called the University of Sciences in Philadelphia. The tasks of pharmacy technicians have changed in means of procedures, responsibilities, and restrictions.…
As nursing professionals we must be guided by the Code of Ethics, which governs and guides us in the right way we should behave as professionals. An ambulatory care pharmacist works closely with a medical team in order to provide the best course of therapy for a patient managing a chronic disease state. Ambulatory care caters to patients that are able to arrive at a clinic by their own means, in order to see a physician. Upon arrival at the clinic they are seen by a team of health professionals, including a pharmacist. Pharmacists assist physicians with medication information, checking for drug interactions, and recommending an alternative course of therapy when the current therapy is too expensive or is hard for the patient to maintain (Urbine, Link, Schneider, Schmitz, and Kistler, 2012). Ambulatory care pharmacist work closely with patients suffering from chronic disease states,…
Talking about diabetes in one thing. Talking about diabetes while it waits your doorstep is a whole other story. I live with a high risk of diabetes. Countless members of my family have been diagnosed with this disease and some have passed away because of it. Diabetes runs through both sides of my family. My paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather, my maternal grandfather’s brothers, and my maternal grandmother’s older sister all suffer from the same disease. For all of them, the daily routine never changed. They all swallowed pill after pill and conducted blood test after blood test. To this day, I still remember watching them swallow pills the size of almonds and cringing whenever they pricked themselves to conduct a blood test. I…
This can be improved in our pharmacy by firstly the pharmacist discussing medication with patients which can also include a medicine usage review. This is when the pharmacist privately speaks to a patient alone to discuss how, why and when medication is taken and if patients have any issues or problems. This is when a patient can discuss reasons for why medication is not taken or why it is taken incorrectly and the reasons for it so the pharmacist can put in place a plan for the patient to help them, such as contacting the doctor to change medication if the patient is having side effects or lowering the dose if…
I have been presenting professionalism throughout four years of pharmacy school. I will keep showing professionalism by utilizing all positive skills and experience I gained from school as well as rotation sites to advance the future practice as a pharmacist after graduation. For example, I want to work as a community pharmacist where I will continue showing professionalism by showing up on time, being punctual at work, interacting in a respectful manner with the customers while providing recommendations and communicating properly with other health care…
All these elements are centered on the aspects of community involvement, enlightened living, and a life of productive work. Looking at a life of productive work, it motivates me to meet the professional standards of pharmacy, which can only be attained through performing well academically. I further have to put what I have learned to practice, by conducting any part time activity that can enable me to extend my services to other individuals, such as voluntary activities in health organizations which can be cleaning, handling health equipment, etc. For community involvement, I will be able to serve as a pharmacist, thereby enabling me to serve the community and enhance individuals’ state of health. Lastly, for the enlightened living aspect, I will be able to foster my capabilities in the health sector with the changing medical trends, thereby be able to be in line with any changes experienced in the health…
My short-term goal is to work hard in school and learn to relate knowledge to real life, and get lots of practical experience during my rotations. My long term goal is to work as a pharmacist with my current employer. I have worked in a closed door pharmacy for 11 years and now desire to specialize in that field dealing with geriatrics patients. I really enjoy having the feeling that I am making a difference in people’s life’s. When I was doing my rotation’s, I had counselled a lot of patients and the most delightful and grateful people were elderly patients. I felt like I really connected with elderly people and seeing the smile on their face and their appreciation for my advice really brightens my day. When I look at geriatric population, my parents really come to mind and I want to provide them with the best evidenced based care in pharmacy. I know elderly people are a challenge to work with due to their comorbidities, but I also know they are the ones who need the most help for managing it. Working in a long term care, I see elderly patients with literally 20 medications and I am always trying my best to check if they really need all of them.…
Choosing pharmacy as a career was a process involving reflection on my life experiences, talents and interests. I have seen firsthand all of the good that I can do with the knowledge of becoming a pharmacist. My mom, being a pharmacist, has been a fundamental influence in my decision to pursue a career in pharmacy. The image of my mom as a pharmacist, however, is not one of her working in a pharmacy. Growing up I watched my mom manage my grandmother’s medications.…
Belonging from a business background family I always had inclination towards managerial role in the organization. I am a man with professional aptitude and an interest in pharmaceutical industry. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I feel the greatest value in pharmacy studies is not so much the classes themselves but the accompanying thesis/practical work experience that you get in tandem with the coursework. Personally, I find the pharmaceutical training I will be getting to be an asset to my qualification, because I feel that I am getting a social and management perspective on the medicine I have studied managerial role in the health and social sector, and it does add something to the coursework.…
