Cognitive Enhancement
I really enjoyed this article because I've always been very interested in cognitive enhancement. Anything that can make humans think better, faster, or easier is a huge step forward. It makes sense that doing the same thing over and over using skills you've already learned doesn't make you smarter. For example, if you text all day everyday you aren't paying much attention because it's the norm. However, if you're learning a new skill you constantly have to think about it because you're not used to it. Doing this can make you think and process information fast by strengthening your synapses. Thoughts are electrical impulses that travel from neuron to neuron through a synapse. It's basically just transmits information, so the stronger the synapse the easier the brain and can transmit thought. I find it no surprise that nicotine improves a person's focus. It is a mild stimulant which increases dopamine. This is the same way Adderall works in the brain to improve focus. The only thing I do not agree with is that food and supplements have little or nothing to do with cognitive enhancement. Nutrition is start of everything in the body. Studies have shown a low sugar/low carbohydrate diet to improve focus, treat ADHD, and prevent Alzheimer's. There are also many vitamins and minerals humans are deficient in due to the typical American diet. I strongly believe supplements help to fix that. Proper vitamins and minerals improve the performance of the body and the mind. I really enjoyed this article because I've always been very interested in cognitive enhancement. Neuroscientists argue that Cognitive Enhancement, is what we may need while another scientist argue that the side effects may be more than what we or the recipient signs up for, what both parties agree on is change of the way we think and function; according to the University of Washington Neuroscience. Studies of the brain have been pursued for centuries, for example, in 387 B.C when Plato spoke about the brain being the “set of mental processes” in Athens or, in 1755 when J.B. LeRoy decided to use electro conclusive therapy as a remedy for mental illnesses, and more recently when the FDA approved the drug Chlorpromazine to be used in 1950. Throughout history the brain has been studied and strengthened to make living smoother and introduce new theories to enhance the field of neuroscience. While both parties hold strong arguments, one may believe that the development and use of brain enhancements are beneficial.…

Achievement is valued highly in our society. Coaches want their players to give 110 percent, professors encourage their students to study harder, and parents want to see their children become the best person they can be. Not only do we want to "keep up with the Joneses," we want to surpass them. In the pursuit of excellence, some people will take drugs as an enhancement for their cognitive abilities. What makes this path to excellence ethically questionable? There are two large issues to using cognitive enhancements: fairness and the pressure to use them. While there may be nothing intrinsically wrong with using cognitive enhancers, the use of these drugs will likely have major side-effects on society which need to be taken into consideration.…

Cognitive enhancement is the improvement of one’s mental capacity and or mental attributes such as personality, where it is considered optional and not medically necessary (Schmidt-Felzmann, 2012). Enhancement is different to treatment as treatment is linked to the curing of an illness, whereas enhancement is merely improving an already medically healthy body or mind, however, at times it is quite difficult to draw a line between the two (Schmidt-Felzmann, 2012). Types of enhancements include improving one’s athletic abilities through the use of steroids, undergoing cosmetic surgery which is deemed medically unnecessary, or, reducing one’s need to sleep through the consumption of drugs…

Cognitive disorders are a category of mental health disorders that primarily affect learning, memory, perception, and problem solving, and include amnesia, dementia, and delirium. While anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and psychotic disorders can also have an effect on cognitive and memory functions, the DSM-IV-TR does not consider these cognitive disorders, because loss of cognitive function is not the primary (causal) symptom. Causes vary between the different types of disorders but most include damage to the memory portions of the brain. Treatments depend on how the disorder is caused. Medication and therapies are the most common treatments; however, for some types of disorders such as certain types of amnesia, treatments can suppress the symptoms but there is currently no cure.…

From a newborn baby to an eleven year old child, cognitive development is affected by both inherited genes (nature) and experiences that take place throughout our lives (nurture). The development of the human brain plays an important role in living, learning, and other skills needed throughout life. Our brain's cognitive understanding and interpretation of information is what makes us all individuals. Though many machines or computers can perform many functions such as mathematics or language, they cannot come close to replicating the complexities that allow every individual to form the personality and emotion that makes us unique.…

Learning is really hard for me because I give up too soon on things I don’t know. I always thought education was not meant for me, so I just gave up. Do you ever feel this way too? In the article Developing Growth Mindsets: How Praise Can Harm, and How to Use it Well Carol Dweck builds on Benjamin Barber statement that the world is divided into learners and non-learners. So which are you? A learner or non-learner? Do you have a fixed mindset or do you have a growth mind set? It’s okay if you don’t know which you are. I have a hard core fixed mindset. All I think about is getting a good grade, and if I don’t get that grade, I want I make the quick judgment that I was not born to know the subject. My mindset changed when I read Developing Growth Mindsets: How Praise Can Harm, and How to Use it Well. I learned that people can change their mindsets from fixed to growth mindsets if they want. I decided that I want to change my mindset to growth mindset, and since the day I have changed it from a fixed to a growth mindset. I have grown in many ways, especially in my learning and in my everyday life. Different mindsets can change people lives for better or for worse. Most people have developed a fixed mindset because they don’t want people to tell them that they are not good at something, but there are 4 in 10 people who have growth mindsets and are open to new learning experiences.…
