Annoying cashiers was something my siblings and I did quite unintentionally as kids. Down the block from the street we lived on, there was a little convenience store that sold Italian ices, ice cream bars, and a variety of assorted goodies; on hot summer days, we would gather what little change we could find in the couch cushions and pay for our selected treats with pennies, nickels, dimes, and, if the cashier was lucky, quarters. That was when I started thinking about pennies. Are pennies useful? Back in the day, you could buy a stick of gum for a penny! Now, with inflation, pennies do not have the purchasing power they used to. This has led to the question of whether the United…

Do people really need that one extra cent? People normally just leave them on the ground or in a fountain. Some people want to stop minting the penny and to never use it again, but others want to keep using the penny and not get rid of it. Some people are fighting to get rid of the penny and these articles may pull people to their side: “Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish?”(Source 1), “Is the Penny Worth It?”(Source 2), “Give a Penny-Save the Day!”(Source 3), and “The Ever-Changing Penny”(Source 4). Some think the U.S. penny should be discontinued because it takes more than one penny to make a penny, it’s not worth much, and it’s a pain to count out when you are paying for something.…

Caught up in our busy lives, Americans tend to take things for granted and fail to appreciate the little things in life. These little things have big meanings, and are much more important than we care to admit. For instance, we often pay little attention to small amounts of currency in the form of coins or more specifically, pennies.. We bustle around cities and schools and workplaces, fishing for cash to purchase a much-needed coffee or snack. Upon arriving to the cash register, we scramble into our wallets for a few pennies to reach the exact price value of our item. This has become a mindless habit, but some people have grown tired of the time wasted by penny-pinchers. However, these grumpy customers fail to recognize the depth…

From time to time, we find an isolate penny in a pocket or purse; however, we never seem to find them in our pockets when paying for a cup of coffee that costs $2.02. This scenario shows one of the main reasons I believe the production of the pennies should stop. In our day and time, most people do not use pennies when paying for things. Most people do not even pay with cash, as…

The penny, the smallest coin in the U.S., that honors president Abraham Lincoln, is now essentially worthless. Back not too long ago, it was possible to go the store and get a whole bag of candy for a nickel, or a chocolate bar for a penny. But now that is no longer possible. Nowadays the price of everything is much higher than it used to be, which means that small amounts don’t go as far. As source C explained, there used to be penny-poker, penny candy, and five and dime stores. Now, penny poker would be played with dollar bills, penny candy could cost you a couple hundred pennies, and the five and dime is a “dollar store”. The value of money has dropped leaving everything more expensive. As source C states, “it takes nearly a dime today…

“A penny saved is a penny earned” (Benjamin Franklin). In The United States virtually anyone can find a symbolic reminder of why the nation has flourished the way it has and why it continues. The pride that a usual American holds within themselves is the reason why the The United States continues to flourished rather then to terminate all the advancements. “The one cent piece, commonly referred to as the ‘penny’, has been a part of United States history for over two hundred years.” It’s time for those two hundred years, and counting, to be over. The penny needs to stop being produced to best help the consumer and the government. In “Penny Anti” by John Fund, the economical reasons for getting rid of the penny are listed, as well as alternative solutions to the one-cent piece. In the second article, “The Many Faces of the Penny,” by J. Wendell Shelton, there is a backstory of how the penny we know today came to be. In source three, “The Cost of a Penny,” a letter written by David R. Carroll, the author begs readers to abolish the penny for numerous reasons. And finally, in “Save the Penny--Save the Day!” by an anonymous middle schooler, the student talks about how charities will suffer without the penny. All of the passages believe in the usefulness, or lack thereof, of the penny. However, both articles make valid points for what should be done with our one-cent piece.…
