Vietnam War The Cold War was the base to creating the Vietnam War. The Indochina War contributed create the Vietnam War as well. The Cold War and the Vietnam War were almost the same war. The countries in each war argued over whose way of leading or ruling was right. The Vietnam War did have fighting though. But, the Indochina War wasn’t like that. The Indochina war was over who should have power in Vietnam. To fully understand the Vietnam war, you have to understand the Cold War and the Indochina War.

Johnson sent over U.S. military forces in the beginning of 1965. Operations had crossed some international borders. Laos and Cambodia were bombed very heavily once American involvement peaked in 1968. The communists tried to overthrow South Vietnam’s government with the Tet Offensive. This did fail, but it was a turning point in the war. The Tet Offensive persuaded a large portion of the US population that the government was lying to them about being on the winning side of the Vietnam War. The U.S. realized that they needed to leave the war to just the Vietnamese people. Gradually, the US started to bring back all of their aids and troops, leaving the war to the Vietnamese. By the 15th of August in 1973, US involvement concluded officially. The capture of Saigon by the Viet Cong in 1975 marked the end of the war. This makes the North Vietnamese and its supporters the winners of the war. The following year, Vietnam reunited as one. The war cost much human life. Roughly 800,000 Vietnamese citizens and soldiers were killed. Many Laotians, Cambodians, and U.S service members were killed. Also, there are about 1,200 still missing in action. The Vietnam war lasted nearly 20 years and cost many lives. The human race will never forget the lives taken in this
