Cole In Spirit Bear, By Ben Mikaelsen
In the novel spirit bear by Ben Mikaelsen, the main character is cole, cole is very independent, I know this because on page (3,4) there is a sentence in the passage that said, “He didn't trust anyone who wasn't afraid of him” He is also feeling mad and kind of sad because his parents don't really seem to care about him, as shown in this sentence on page (9) in the passage cole said “He hated his parents his mom acted like a scared barbie doll, always looking good but never fighting back or standing up to someone, his dad a bullheaded drinker with a temper.

In the novel spirit bear by Ben Mikaelsen, cole is in a jail debating to set things right and send him to zoo to to appreciate animals as shown in this sentence on page (11) in the story

    Cole Matthews is an abused child who turned into a troubled kid because his parents abused him every day. He became an angry person who was willing to take anybody out in his way. When he got into trouble he would manipulate everyone into thinking he was sorry but he never really meant it. Cole hated everyone because anytime he didn’t get his way he would resort to the same violence and anger his father used on him. Cole thinks everything is a game, he thinks he should never be responsible for his own actions. Cole managed to get away with everything with no issues until he assaulted Peter. Cole thought he did no wrong because Peter told on him and anyone. Cole thought he could talk his way out of the assault charges like the other events when he got into trouble. The only reason Cole joined circle justice is because Garvey told him he could avoid going to jail. If Garvey hadn’t gotten Cole to join Circle Justice he wouldn’t have changed his bad ways. Being alone on the island, getting attacked by the spirit bear, and learning ways to relieve his anger through soaking in the pond and pushing the rock taught him to view the world in a new perspective. Cole realized that staying angry was the worst thing he could have done. He finally accepted his actions and saw the error in his ways. I saw the change in Cole’s character when he wanted to help Peter channel his anger. Cole never cared about anyone besides himself throughout his entire life. He was actually trying to help and wanted to be forgiven by Peter. Cole deceived everyone in his life and never cared about it. It was now in his best interest to become a better person, and rid himself of the evil he did in his life.…

    Cole starts to trust himself, trust his decisions and believe in himself. Since Cole has been sentenced to one year banishment on this island his self confidence went drastically down. He shut himself down and ignored everyone who cared about him and wanted to help him out of his stressful situation. Cole’s mother was mostly drunk out of her mind, she drank away her fear and depression until she realized how hurt Cole actually was. After Cole got mauled by the Spirit Bear his mother went to court and charged Cole’s father with abuse and as a result Cole let his mother back in and started to trust her again. Cole finally started to trust Edwin and Garvey because they were the only people really putting in an effort to help Cole. At the beginning they were the only ones that cared about Cole. The first time Cole was sent to the island he wanted absolutely nothing to do with Garvey or Edwin. All he wanted was to escape from the island. Cole thought that they did not actually want to help him. Cole thought they were just paid to. Once Cole got mauled by the Spirit Bear he had forty-eight hours to think about everything, most importantly Edwin and Garvey.
