Collaboration In Professional Nursing
Good evening professor and classmates, It is true that communication is the foundation of all interpersonal relationships with a two-fold purpose of giving and receiving information. It is very important for the professional nurses to develop communication strategies that they can use to specifically promote collaboration with other healthcare disciplines and professionals. “Effective communication and collaboration among health professionals is imperative to providing patient centered care”(The American College of Nursing,2008,p.22). As we know communication and team collaboration is crucial in the healthcare setting, for example I work in the Oncology/Hematology unit to prevent any medication error two oncology certified nurses must do the specific doges calculations individually and verify with the pharmacist. In addition, both nurses must asses the patient and reviewed lab work, past medical history and any possible adverse reaction. Teamwork among healthcare professionals is associated with delivering high quality and safe patient care (Barnsteiner, Disch, Hall, Mayer, & Moore, 2007). …show more content…

This core competence explains how it teamwork and collaboration functions effectively within the nursing and other team members, fostering open communication, mutual respect and shared decision making to achieve quality patient care. Teamwork and collaboration is what nursing are all about. It is important to be a good team player and help your fellow nurses. It is also important to collaborate with other team members, to be all on the same page about what the plan of care will be and what is going on with the patient from different standpoints. Collaborating is a must in the nursing practice, as a nurse, you collaborate with the doctors about the plan of care and orders, with pharmacy about medications and doses recommended, with physical and occupation therapy, and so many other team members. As my nursing leader discussed, teamwork essential, and when unsure ask your fellow nurse for clarification, instead of jeopardizing the patient safety. Nurses help make safe and efficient decisions regarding the patient needs preferences and values. Impact of IOM

In 2010, the United States healthcare system began its dramatic transformation as the president signed comprehensive healthcare legislation into law. The legislation, cumulatively referred to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), offered 32 million, previously uninsured Americans, access to affordable health insurance (IOM, 2011). As Americans rejoiced and signed up for insurance, concern mounted as to whether the current healthcare system could tolerate the increased patient load. The nursing profession, in particular, was expected to face several obstacles in response to a transformed healthcare system (Trouble, 2014). According to an article in Health Affairs, addressing these obstacles requires effective production and use of the nursing workforce (Rother & Lavizzo-Mourey, 2009). In an effort to guide the impending increase of Americans expected to seek healthcare, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) along with the Committee on the Robert Wood Foundation (RWJF) formed an initiative on the future of nursing. The 2-year initiative served as an action-based model for the restructuring of the nursing profession (IOM, 2011). The committee identified four key messages that guided the IOM discussion including the future of nursing education, nursing practice and the nurse’s role as a leader. The key messages and recommendations of the initiative on nursing provided nurses with the unique opportunity to further define its role in the healthcare field.…

Because of changes in the practice environment, the nurse who holds a baccalaureate degree is beginning to experience greater autonomy, responsibility, participation in institutional decision making, and career advancement. “The two major current reports on nursing, Nursing Education (Benner et al. 2010)and the Future of Nursing (IOM, 2011) both recommend that entry into practice should require BSN” (Finkelman & Kenner, 2013,p 121). However, this mandate should be applied in the future to facilitate the transition from the two pathways; a diploma or associate degree programs to only one pathway which is a baccalaureate degree in…

Research has shown that ineffective communication between physicians and nurses can result in missed or delayed diagnosis, unnecessary or repeated testing and over prescribing of medications (Espetin, 2010). It has also been shown that poor communication between team members can have a negative effect on patients in ways of psychosocial experiences. This occurs when patients are confronted with information depending on the nature and quality of information that is transmitted to them and can also affects the enactment and outcome of the decision making process regarding treatment opinions (Thorne, Bultz & Baile, 2005). As a result, patients are often dissatisfied with the amount of knowledge they receive from medical professionals and they, in turn, express that this is an area requiring improvement (Conn, Lingard, Reeves, Miller, Russell & Zwarenstein, 2010). As noted above, poor communication between team members often results in negative outcomes not only for the team itself but also for the patients. Because communication plays a vital role in effective collaboration, healthcare providers must address potential breakdowns so as to ensure productive dialogue and to create troubleshooting strategies. The College of Nurses of Ontario website states that communication is how nurses establish and maintain their therapeutic relationships by building trust, empathy and receptivity (CNO, 2006). This information is also applied to interprofessional collaboration. Effective communication strategies which strengthen nurse-patient relationships can also strengthen nurse – physician relationships. Since communication occurs both verbally and non-verbally, it is important to be aware of the many ways through which one communicates and to understand the fundamental role communication plays in patient care (CNO,…

Unlike many professions in the world, nursing is a career that requires vast amounts of interpersonal communication with patients, families, and fellow care providers. This large amount of communication is not an easy load to handle especially when a nurse has to communicate and also maintain professionalism. To preserve professionalism while working, a nurse must maintain professional communication, have positive first impressions upon patients and coworkers, follow values that allow for relationship building, and communicate in order to build trust.…

The benefits of baccalaureate training are significant in comparison to the training of an associate’s degree nurse. The baccalaureate trained nurse exhibits a broader knowledge in all aspects of the healthcare environment and has a more solid foundation of critical thinking and problem solving. Additionally, the baccalaureate program promotes leadership skills which are vital for establishing a positive work environment especially with today’s almost crippling shortage of a highly-effective nursing workforce. However, the associate degree training is not without its many benefits, which includes opening the door quickly to entry-level nurses. Beginning nurses are able to enter the field with a basic knowledge of technical skills with little time constraint and at minimal expense. With only 16 to 20 percent of all RN’s returning to continue their education into the BSN program (source), the question must be raised as to the obstacles these nurses face which prevent them from doing so. The issue of access was ruled out when a 2003 article by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing reported that 628 Baccalaureate schools of nursing across the United States offered RN to BSN programs. Another issue which was looked at was the articulation agreement process which helps to define the overall standards of the RN to BSN program, thereby alleviating confusion and focusing on the final goal consistency. Progress is ongoing in trying to provide a…

We often hear that nursing is an art and a science, and I firmly believe that. The way a nurse blends those aspects of care defines the nurse. As nurses, our roles in our patients’ lives vary depending on their needs. We are teachers as well as technical experts, and our ultimate goal is to ensure our patients and families are ready to take over when the patient no longer requires our care.…
