Medial collateral ligament repair is a surgical procedure that repairs your medial collateral ligament (MCL). Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bones. Your MCL holds your knee joint in place and connects the inside of the two bones that come together at your knee.
You may need an MCL repair if your ligament has been torn or ripped away (avulsed) from its attachment. In some cases, the ligament can be reattached. Other times, a surgeon may need to use a piece of tendon (graft) to replace your torn ligament. A tendon is a fibrous tissue that attaches muscle to bone. Your surgeon may be able to use a piece of your own tendon (autograft). This is usually taken from a tendon near your knee. Or, …show more content…
• You will be given one or more of the following:
○ A medicine that helps you relax (sedative).
○ A medicine that numbs the area (local anesthetic).
○ A medicine that makes you fall asleep (general anesthetic).
○ A medicine injected into your spine that numbs your body below the waist (spinal anesthetic).
• Your knee area will be cleaned with a germ-killing solution (antiseptic).
• Your surgeon will make a cut (incision) or several incisions over the inside of your knee. The size and number of incisions will depend on what type of damage you have.
• Your surgeon may use a surgical scope (arthroscope) to look inside your knee.
• If your MCL was avulsed, it may be reattached to the bone with stitches or staples.
• If your MCL was torn, it may be stitched back together.
• If you do not have enough MCL left to make a repair, the graft may be held in place with stitches, staples, or screws.
• After the procedure is complete, the surgeon will close your incision or incisions with stitches or staples and place a bandage (dressing) over the incisions.
The procedure may vary among health care providers and hospitals.
