Orwell battles a constant struggle between his role as a British Police Officer and as a citizen who can recognize the error of the dominating, imperialistic government whose rules he must enforce. Orwell dislikes the tyrannical ways of British imperialism and is also discontent with the “evil-spirited little beasts who try to make his job impossible”. Orwell details the struggle between the misconception that he is another white tyrant in the British regime and the reality that he is just a puppet being controlled by strongholds of the government who employs him. Orwell must also face the strongly opinionated and oppressed natives who misjudge him and his moral compass. Orwell shoots the elephant because he cracks under the pressure to maintain his authority as a British officer and because of his inner conflict with the tyranny of imperialism which the elephant represents.…

When Cayli, my daughter, started kindergarten I started talking to her about going to college and how it was the most important thing she could do for herself. In turn she would ask me what kind of degree did I get and I would look at her and tell her that I did not go to college and this is why I wanted her to so she would not have to live paycheck to paycheck like her father and I did. After awhile, I started to feel like a hypocrite every time I would insist she went to college and not going wasn't an option. I knew in that instance that I had to go back and get my own college degree.…

My most prized possession is my mental stability and ethical background that I have acquired from my southern upbringing. Growing up in a rural community in the south and being reared by elderly parents allowed my seeds of character and respect to be nurtured by an entire village of people who saw my potential and wanted to see me succeed and thus pushed and prayed for my wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. As a child, series of unique experiences of being able to develop intimate and loving relationships with almost everyone in my community made me appreciate the influence of everyone on my life. It was not long before I realized that no matter how old or young, rich or poor, or educated a person was, everyone contributed to humanity’s niche…

I come from a family of six with only one parent who works as a painter. His income is just enough to pay for our food, bills, rent, and personal needs. For this reason I think about and stress over about how I will cover payments for college repeatedly. My parents taught me that “dreams are the touchstones of our character” and that it is important to dream big while remaining clear on goals and realistic with decisions. On the path to deciding my future, their advice remains with me and assists in establishing myself in the goals that I have set.…
