When my younger sister was four years old, she attended a dance lesson with a friend for a day. She immediately fell in love with it, and picked up lessons the following week. A year later, I thought “this is a great way to stay in shape and keep myself busy.” Little did I know how much I would fall in love with it. People typically born with FAI do not face issues at a young age, unless they engage in an activity that irritates it. With FAI, it is impossible for me to become flexible, and dance requires flexibility. Without knowing my condition, I continued to dance which caused damage to my labrum in my hip. The doctor said had I chosen an activity that was suitable for my hips, I never would have encountered a problem. I am too involved in my final dance year to stop and let down my teammates. Do I regret choosing dance? Never. Despite my physical difficulties, I chose something I love, even though my body was not built for it. I have found a home and place where I can be myself in dancing. Dance is where I can relax and forget about everything for a while. Martha Graham once said, “A great dancer is not great because of their technique; they are great because of their passion.” I find this quote to be true of myself. I may not be the best dancer in the world, but what matters most is that I enjoy
