My passion for biology was established when I completed an assignment on the digestive system whilst studying in Singapore. This small event was the beginning of my passion for science. From this I was able to gain …show more content…
an understanding that the human body is an incredible machine that can defy the logic of many of the world’s greatest scientist. My desire to study chemistry only began a year ago when I studied medicinal chemistry and learnt the effects of medicines and drugs on the Human body such as a placebos which contain no active ingredient except it fools the body into healing. These examples are just the beginning of why i would like to further my education in Biomedical field, to understand the human body and the wonders it performs.
Throughout my education, I have been fortunate to attend schools where community service and global concern are a integral part of their mission statement strongly engrained within us.
Because of this my passion to help communities have only strengthened. Also participating in Debate Chamber’s Junior Doctor summer school and Medicine Summer School allowed to me to understand surgical skills such as suturing whilst developing my knowledge of medical topics, including paediatrics and oncology. Also working with people of various ages ranging from 80 years old (volunteering at an elderly home) who suffered from a stroke damaging the broca area and cerebellum part of the brain to 12 year year (volunteering at a local primary school teaching years 7s geography) olds who displayed various characteristics and 3 year olds (volunteering at my local primary school) who displayed characteristics of hyperactivity has enabled me to have a deeper understanding of the different types of people in different
environments.
Whilst studying in South Africa I was of the three senior members of the Activities council where we planned major sports events for schools across Africa to compete against each other. I am currently the co-founder of a direct applicant group which allow direct applicants to have the experience as national committee students and I am a student representative for the school student social and lifestyle committee, one of the leaders for the technology council and the marketing manager for my schools cafe. These groups have made me suitable to be a doctor as it shows that I do what I am passionate
Working in a clinic in Harley Street, taught me about various diseases such as recent clinical studies show that IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a spectrum and symptoms can manifest differently. Also putting fasces inside the stomach can cure the most extreme cases of IBS. I was also able to watch blood-tests being performed and examining urine samples and how through these tests can show if a person is more immune or has a certain disease. This experience allowed me to see both biomedical and medical aspect of clinical works.
Not only have such experience enabled me to learn various things, it has made me want to further explore why the human body reacts in certain environments, how the genetic make up of a human allows it to perform only certain things and the human body varies from person to person. And I believe perusing my education in the Biomedical field will allow me to do that. Andres Iniesta said “There are moments when the human body can overcome things you would never expect” and I look forward to being part of a university community that will allow me to explore why the human body works in this way.
