College Degree Benefits
Statistically speaking, the median income of a college graduate is significantly higher than that of a high school graduate. However, for most people this statistic is simply one reason amongst many. While money is definitely a motivating factor when considering college, I strongly feel that there are more benefits to college than simply getting a well paying job. College provides a way to learn important skills, experience independence, and provides a place to discover where I want to go with my life. Over the course of college learning to act in a professional manner will be critical to my success. It will be necessary to learn how to interact with professors in a professional manner much in the same way a worker interacts with a boss. …show more content…
No longer will I have a parent dictating to me what I should or should not do. I have to make my own choices and suffer the consequences if the decision results in a negative outcome. Ultimately, this is what it means to be an adult and college is a great place to experience what is essentially the start of adulthood. While there are many other factors that contributed to my decision, as I look back, the defining characteristic was uncertainty. Currently, my goal with regards to education is to become a doctor. However, if over my four years at UC Irvine I discover that becoming a doctor is not a career that I wish to pursue, I can choose from a plethora of majors that give me a wide range of other career options. After all, what is most important in life is that I am satisfied with who I am as a person. Attending UC Irvine could save me from going into a career I would loathe. As a young adult so much is still uncertain in my life and going to college assures me that there is more than one path to success. When I look at the decision to go to college I truly feel that I have made the right choice. Much of what I have done in life has me to where I am today.
