In the article “The Myth of Inferiority”, the author, Allan Culpepper, talks about people’s point of views about community college students. Unlike most universities or colleges, community college students are older, first generation students, work multiple jobs, and/or have to take care of dependents. Financial stability is the main issue community college students face. Yes, they do have “hard lives”, but does that justify for excessive absences, rewrite opportunities, and late papers? “Hard lives” do not justify excessive absences; however, they do justify rewrite opportunities and late papers.…

Have you changed since you started college? “Does Coming to College Mean Becoming Someone New?” by Kevin Davis talks about his journey through college and how the school system made him hate what he thought he loved. The question arose in his article: do you become someone different when you arrive at college? Through my experience here at SUNY Oswego for the first year, I would say you definitely learn to think differently when it comes to your major. This is not always a bad thing, in fact, it’s a positive benefit. Thinking differently and more critically about things helps you grow as a person. Myself being a broadcasting major, watching TV is very hard for me now. Coming to college changes your outlook on your major or field, yourself and even life in general.…
There are many things that can affect how people will live their lives. It’s not everyday that you hear that college can’t bring you success, so growing up the most common thing we are told is that we need to go to college to be successful. That it's our only option to a path of success. Now that i'm older I understand that college is an important part of being successful, but it’s not the most important and the only path to get me where I want to go. I believe that yes college is important, but it's not that you can't live a life of success without a degree it’s that college is an easy alternative to get you there.…
For people who have already finished high school, one of the choices they will have to make is whether to continue to higher education, which means going to college, or to start working and planning their life right away. Different people will have different choices of their own, but for me, I think there are a couple of reasons why I should attend college. I decided to go to college to get a bachelor’s degree in engineering, which will help me find a better job, learn more skills, and meet new people.…
There are a few students who have factors which have influenced their decision on whether or not they would like to go to college. I've interviewed a friend of mine named, Meagan King. She goes to Fordham University and is also a part of the Alvin Ailey Program. I asked her several questions such as, "Do you think college is needed in order to have a good career and why?, did your financial status affect whether u went to college?, how is the audition process?, Advice on college processes?, and how difficult is it to get into a BFA program?". Within the following paragraphs are responses from Meagan to my questions.…
College is a big transition from High School. College is there to teach students knowledge, and to prepare every college student for the next chapter of their lives. Most freshman that go to Western Michigan University (WMU), decide to live in the valleys. “Valley residence halls feature suites where two student rooms share a connecting bathroom. These large, coed halls have a picturesque peaceful setting and are close to the Haworth College of Business, Intramural Fields and Goldsworth Valley pond” (“Residence Halls”). There are a total of three valleys that are about a twenty minute walk from main campus. There have been many problems with the dorms such as the noise, the size of the rooms, hygiene, the water, and the resident assistants.…
From my old elementary days and on up to now being a senior in highschool. I have always enjoyed school and have always been motivated and focused when it came to school. For me to even think about the idea of going to college is a dream come true. To me college is a great opportunity to further my education and to plan and work on my future career. Being only seventeen I would describe myself as a kind, hardworking, and respectful person. I believe in life that no matter what someone says always go after your goals and hard work pays off. I want to go to college to soon work in Real Estate. Going to college will help me set my future of what I want to work as in this world.…
With a college degree being as needed as it is, it is incredibly expensive to get one. Studies show that many high school graduates that do attend college, attend that following year bringing the colleges plenty of money. After doing some math, the numbers suggest that in general most colleges are bringing in plenty of extra money with an average 5.3 million dollars of profit. This is something that majorly hurts students financially who are just trying to get a college degree, which will be in turn used to essentially get themselves a well-paying career so they can pay back what they spent to get their college degree in the first place.…
Throughout my life, I have done several different things in my life that I am not proud of. If I could take back one of those actions, it would probably be when I almost decided not to go to college. I planned on going throughout my entire high school career, but when I graduated, I kept putting it off. I had my mind set that I wanted to wait a year before I went. I was planning on going to Ohio University, but then when my senior year finally got here, I decided I wanted to go to Hocking College. I knew that Hocking had the subject that I wanted to major in, and I also knew that it would be a lot cheaper. I figured if I could go to school and not be piled up in student loans, I would be much better off in the future. I’m glad that I motivated myself to go because I feel like if I would have held off, then I would have never gone.…
Going to college was not a very important thing to me as much as playing sports or doing other things interested me and I didn't think about what I wanted to be or what college I am looking for. Spending most of my time playing and doing the things I thought were important. I did not have a strong reason to attend college, especially since my Father did not even finish middle. For a very long years I watched my Father working hard and he did not seem to have a problem with it at all. I even could not imagine him as a doctor or an engineer. I liked him the way he was. I did not realize how hard his hard was because he never talked to me about it.…
Going to college is important for me, because I believe that it is the next step forward to success. A better education means a better job, and the field that I am going in to requires for me to go to college and have a degree. Why college is important to me are not only because of money, in order to succeed and have little or no struggle financially, you must have a education that will end up being a career of my choice, and not just something I want to settle for, but it has to do with and my life. We all have more than one dream job and we really have to settle for just one, I have always dreamed about teaching history in high school. It's my ultimate dream and goal in life to achieve that dream of becoming a teacher. Without going to college, getting a degree, I would not be able to go into that field.…
How many time have you complained after entering the university? I believe that more complaints that you have made, less satisfactory that you have. To enjoy university life, you should and could reduce the complaints. You may say, it is not your fault. You are not able to control others and force them to do better. In fact, what you should control are not others. Instead, it is your mind. I mean, you should think positive. I remember the second ocamp that I have joined. The greatest activity in the camp is water battle. It is the best way to fight against the glaring sun during the summer holiday. Pouring water to each other, all people got wet, excluded a boy. He stood away from the battlefield and became the only observer of the battle. Why he did not grab a water gun? There were a number of reasons. He said ‘Oh. It is not healthy. Getting wet make us cough, sneeze and finally get cold. And is so wasteful that drinking water is used in playing.’ Everybody were exciting but he was angry. The only similarity of them was that they were crazy. The reason that the boy failed to enjoy the game is not the content of the game. It is the mind of the boy. I mean, he only thought about the disadvantage but not benefit. From the story, we know that if we keep on being pessimistic, we will not enjoy and even join the game. Thinking positive is the key to have a fulfilled university life. So try to control you mind and be optimistic in the university, as well as in the rest of your life. That’s all I want to share, thank…
Referring to my college life and how it has changed my life is amazing. I once thought of college as just a bigger high-school with all the high-school drama involved, but I was way wrong. The challenges I went through last spring have made me stronger this semester. In my college experience I have experienced three different challenges; such as my fears, how I feel the college life is different and finally how the college life has changed my way of thinking.…
When senior year of high school rolls around the students are confronted with decisions that will affect the rest of their life. Once they have finally decided what school they want to attend, and get accepted they have more decisions to make that may have never crossed their mind before. What seems to be the biggest is if you are going to live in the school dorms, or apartments on and around campus. Of course there is pro’s and con’s to both sides, but simply put living in apartments will be more beneficial and enjoyable for a college student compared to living in the dorms. People may not always agree on this topic, but throughout this paper I will further explain both sides of the situation, but in the end apartments are better.…
