College sports are an inherent part of colleges and universities all over the country. This idea states that colleges and universities should exist for the sole purpose of academics and no more. The argument for this perspective is that college sports place college athletes at an advantage by lowering the academic standards of students and penalizing those who do not participate in college sports. I do not agree with this perspective. I believe that this perspective is agreed with by those who are biased against college sports for one reason or another. This perspective does not show recognition of the benefits that the schools receive by adopting college sports programs. Furthermore, this perspective argues that there are problems with the system that do not exist. One of which is the idea that academic standards are lowered. Academic standards do not change just because a student participates in sports. In addition to that, college sports do not place any student at a disadvantage. I agree partially with this perspective. I do believe that schools need to maintain visualization on what is important, but I do not believe that coaches are being paid unfairly well. If the coaches are responsible for such a large portion of the school’s profits, it makes sense that they would be paid more than other members of the staff.
My perspective covers parts of the first and third perspectives. I believe that college sports should be welcome in colleges and universities all over the world. College sports provide a major benefit for schools in the form of profit and an incentive for students to attend the schools. However, college sports should not cast a shadow over the scholarly aspects of school. The two should coexist and be accessible by anyone. It is important that colleges are attentive and accepting of the potential repercussions of their decisions.
