The education system is changing every year, but one thing remains the same – compulsory subjects at college. Students are made to study those subjects which are nowhere near to their interests. This causes un-necessary burden on the students and is also one of the major reasons why students lose interest in the middle of their course. The ultimate goal of getting educated has grayed out.
If we closely observe the trends, students who go for higher studies are taught around 30-40 subjects during their entire course duration but at the end of the course, they can vouch for not more than 10% of their studies. The return on their investment is very less as compared to expected results if they work in the area of their interest.
There is a well understood possibility that the students might end up selecting wrong subjects but this doesn’t rule out the entire validity of this new concept. Students can be introduced to the subjects through briefing workshops and then let them decide subjects as per their interests. This way, students would be able to give their best. Adding to the flexibility of the course, if students wish to add some new subjects to their course in the future which might be helpful to them, they choose them as electives or extracurricular.
There is a famous saying that a jack of all traits is king at nothing.
The present world needs subject area experts who are thorough in their respective fields in order to create an efficient knowledgeable society. Our next generation needs to have the freedom to select the subjects in which they are interested and subsequently decide their course of life. These changes if incorporated in the system would surely give better results and would lead to a far more level of satisfaction in the society.
