In this article taken from the book Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White Collar Dreams, the journalist/author Alfred Lubrano brings up many things readers wouldn’t normally associate with college. Essentially his main point is to tell the readers that college slowly but surely cuts off connections with people you were once close with, such as family, old hometown boyfriends, and old friends from your hometown that didn’t end up choosing to go to college. He says that college educates you and basically takes away any common ground you once had with old acquaintances, because more knowledge changes you as a person. Alfred brings up the fact that children from lower working class families compared to children from middle class families grow up differently abiding and learning by different rules. Because of this, the lower class or “working class” children will most likely have a more narrow view of things and will be more stubborn when it comes to learning because their parents see things in a very particular way and force their opinions on their own kids. Whereas kids who come from middle class families are more open minded, they are encouraged to learn by their parents, and are allowed to believe in what they want. These are ongoing patterns of children growing up in the different classes of society.…

They say that community college is a lot worse than a four-year college or university. They say only slackers go to community colleges so they barely have to do any type of work. They say professors are terrible and do not know what they are doing at all. They say that anyone who goes to a community college will not get a good job in the future. They may say all of these and more, but have the people saying this ever attended a community college before? Probably not! There are advantages and disadvantages, but every college or university has them.…

UIC is different than other colleges by having a wide choice of research to undergraduates. The Undergraduate Research Experience program works by pairing students with mentors who have the same research interests. Another research program that UIC has is the Undergraduate Research Assistant Program, it gives Honors College students the opportunity to achieve a wide range of research activity that includes business, education, engineering, the humanities and the arts, the natural sciences and mathematics, and the social sciences. A trade school that caught my attention was The College’s academic programs are Student-centered with small classroom sizes—an average faculty-student ratio of 1:19. Classes are taught by professors, not teaching assistants, to ensure students receive the one-on-one attention they need to succeed. We pride ourselves on our faculty students collaborative research project and our service-learning program that enables students to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world situations.…

Are we really that different? Every day we deal with different kinds of people. These people could be a customer in front of you in a check outline, friends, classmates, or even your roommates. So let’s talk about roommates. Roommates can be categorized in there different groups, “Too Friendly Shelly”, “Seriously Stuck-up Christy”, and “Plain Rude Pru”. These three types of people will contribute to a seriously long semester away at college. Having to stay in the same dorm room with anyone of these three types of roommates will be an adventure. There will always be a memorable moment rather is be peace and quiet or drama central. Staying in a dorm with “Too Friendly Shelly”, “Seriously Stuck-up Christy”, “Plain Rude Pru”, and “Studious Mary” will either make you or break you. You may become seriously stressed and extremely home sick but if you push through the nervous breakdown you will make it through the semester.…

Since I was a little kid, I loved to learn about anything I could. I think HPU would inspire me to do great things and learn a lot. I loved to read a lot, and observe the world around me so I could understand it. I loved to find out about things I didn’t know. I loved to find out about bugs and plants, and I especially loved to watch the stars and wonder about them, because they were the hardest to get to, but simultaneously the most beautiful. As I grew up, one of the people I began to really look up to was Neil Degrasse Tyson. He had grown up in New York, a place almost devoid of starlight, and grew up to be a very successful astrophysicist. He worked hard, and became successful in something he was passionate about. In HPU I can see the stars and learn about things around me and my environment. He works closely now with wonders of the universe, and is becoming a leader in his field today. His achievements, combined with his ability to teach others about complex information, and his want to bring the human race into a closer understanding of the universe around is, makes him a great man. It is his example that I like to follow, his determination and curiosity and love of knowing more, he lets his hunger drive him to discover new aspects of the world, knowledge that can help achieve something better in life. I've always admired these qualities, and I’ve always wanted to reflect them in myself. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve always strived to learn more in school and apply myself to subjects that were very enticing to me. I’ve always held that knowledge is power and I believe that my education is a huge part of that. The most exciting part about college, unlike high school, is that I get to choose what I’d like to learn about, which could also help me secure a better career in the future. I love so many different subjects, but I really like how science is a field where its advances can help people, and whatever career I choose, I would like it to be one that helps…

The most important activity to me outside of school is my outreach program. This outreach program has been my rock and guide through high school. This program is designed to help under-represented high school students achieve their goals. This program helps students become successful and responsible through personal and academic enrichment, and I am one of those students. A lot of the focus is put on school and the main goal of getting into a good university. Even though it is much focused on school we also focus on the community and the environment. We do a variety of community service projects a month and even during the summer we are still doing community service. Two of the things we do very frequently is replant mangroves and beach clean-ups. Yes, school is important but this outreach program also teaches me that so is our community and our environment. This outreach program is so important to me because it has helped shape the type of person and student I am today. Before this program I didn’t care much about school but after going through some adversities and being in outreach my mindset changed. Outreach isn’t just a organization it’s a family and this family has been my support system all throughout high school. I personally felt like the outreach family was there for me even when my parents weren’t. This program has encouraged and given me tough love when it was needed. Being in outreach has pushed me to achieve goals that I never thought I could achieve. In the last four years I have learned a great amount of things about myself, life, the world, and how important my education is. I have learned a great sense of responsibility, ownership, and morals in outreach. The program has taught me to strive for personal and academic success. The biggest thing I have learned is that it is okay to ask for help. It doesn’t make me look weak to ask for help, it makes me stronger.…

The University of Toronto offers more than 700 programs. Its most popular programs include; Management, Psychology, English and Human biology. But the program that interests me the most is human biology. The Program offers five undergraduate specialist programs and seven major programs to Arts & Science students. The human biology program is the study of human body parts and the functions in detail. The human biology program involves courses from the medical sciences, biological and social sciences, as well as humanities. The goal of the program is to provide knowledge involving biology, chemistry and a choice of psychology, physics or mathematics. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to go into the work force or pursue further studies in this department.…
