The Collin Technologies Case Study is a fictional Baldrige Award application prepared for use in the 2013
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Examiner Preparation Course. The fictitious case study organization is a small, high-tech manufacturer in the electronics (interconnect) industry. The case study illustrates the format and general content of an award application. However, since the case study serves primarily as a tool for training examiners to evaluate organizations against the 2013–2014 Criteria for Performance Excellence, the application does not address all Criteria requirements or demonstrate role-model responses in all Criteria areas. Please refer to the Collin Technologies Feedback
Report to learn how the organization scored and to see its strengths and opportunities for improvement.
There is no connection between the fictitious Collin Technologies and any other organization, named either
Collin Technologies or otherwise. Except for several national and government organizations, the other organizations cited in the case study are fictitious.

Each student will present a written case analysis which should be no more than 5 and no less than 4 double-spaced pages and is due on the date and time indicated in the course schedule (last page of this syllabus). While I focus on the content of your essay for my grading, clarity of presentation and organization is essential for me to follow your ideas. A good starting point is to look at the case discussion questions in Quiz 4. But your answer cannot be a series of answers to questions but must rather be an essay. Some of these questions will guide your case analysis and should be an aid to you in formulating your answer. Therefore, reading the case before the end of the third week so as to deal with these questions should help you do well in the case project. A good approach to the project is to make sure you include all the elements that I look for in my grading of your assignment.…

Case study research is an investigation of a “bounded system” or a case or multiple cases over time through detailed, in-depth data collection involving multiple sources of information (e.g., observations, audio-visual materials, reports, etc.) (Creswell, 1998). During data collection, Yin (1989) recommended six types of data collection for case studies: 1) documentation; 2) archival records; 3) interviews; 4) direct observations; 5) participant observations; and 6) physical artifacts. Case studies are bounded as they are reflective of a particular program, event, individual, or activity being studied at a particular place and time. Thus, Merriam (1988) described a case study as “an examination of a specific phenomena such as a program, an event, a person, a process, an institution, or social group” (p. 9).…

Kathy routinely required her staff to work long arduous hours, with little time off or breaks. Kathy did not consult the workers on key questions therefore excluding them and not giving them ownership of the project they were working on. Kathy took full ownership of the project and used her workers as instruments and treated them as such instead of being empathetic to their needs and allowing them to be involved in the key parts of the project as owners because they were doing the majority of the work. To remedy this Kathy needs to develop a sense of team work and become a member of the team and work alongside her employees instead of as manager. This will create a sense of belonging and ownership among the workers and also build loyalty and make them all stakeholders in the…
