The Keystone Pipeline is a pipeline system that holds oil and it runs through the United States and Canada. More specifically, it starts in Alberta, Canada at the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and travels to oil refineries in Texas and Illinois as well as oil tank farms and an oil pipeline distribution center located in Cushing, Oklahoma. The Keystone Pipeline consists of three phases as well as one more operation that was awaiting approval but has been rejected. The first phase is the pipeline bringing the oil from Hardisty, Alberta to a connection in Steele City, Nebraska which then disperses into refineries in Illinois. The second phase is an extension that leads from Steele City to distribution and storage facilities…
This week for PLN I read Dakota Access Pipeline: What's at stake? by Holly Yang. Why this topic is blowing up is because where Native American tribes live the government approved a pipeline to be built and where the pipeline is going to be constructed invades the native American's land. Some background of the Dakota Pipeline is it is a 1,172-mile pipeline would stretch from the oil-rich Bakken Formation to the southeast into South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois. The Army Corps of Engineers approved the project then Standing Rock Sioux tribe sued the Corps because it would threaten the tribe environmentally and economically. Some people are arguing that they need the pipeline because it will be an economic boom but on the other hand, people are…
In my opinion, authorizing the Keystone XL pipeline would be damaging to the environment. Displace residents from their home or property if it obstructs the construction of the pipeline. And lastly, will only cause a short term economic benefit to the working class who seek long term employment not a seasonal position.…
Whathappened? On December 12, people discovered that The Belle Forche Pipeline leaked around 176000 gallons of crude oil. On the website, boingboing.net, They claim that, “Yesterday, we learned that the Belle Fourche Pipeline had spilled at least 176,000 gallons of crude oil into Ash Coulee Creek, 150 miles from Cannon Ball, ND, where the water protectors made their stand. The electronic monitoring equipment that was supposed to detect this leak failed.” This proves that one of the most riskiest thing that could happen, happened. And that there could be a high chance that the Dakota Pipeline can do the…
Nebraska has more groundwater than any other state. The Ogallala Aquifer underlies about 174,000 miles of the High Plains. In some places it can get up to 1,000 feet deep. It spans across eight states, including South Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. It is being pumped by close to 200,000 irrigation wells. This water is so important to American Agriculture. It helps hydrate America, so think what would happen if it were to run out?…
TransCanada argues with America how this Keystone XL pipeline will be one of the greatest ideas ever. They state how building the rest of the keystone pipeline system which is 1,179 miles of the pipeline between Alberta and Nebraska which will boost the American economy. For the reason that this very expensive pipeline project will create over 9,000 construction jobs in American for both men and woman. Also on the TransCanada website they promised, “Keystone XL will add more than an estimated $100 million in additional revenues in its first year of operation. Over its operational lifetime, the keystone system will pay hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes to states and counties” (Keystone).…
A proposed oil pipeline project will have the capacity to transport thounsands of barrels of crude oil to refineries in Oklahoma, Illinois, and the Gulf Coast of Texas. The Keystone XL is a 1,711-mile pipeline delivering Canadian crude oil to United States oil markets. This project is a response to the market demand for heavy crude oil in the Unites States. The pipeline will also be used to transport crude oil to the Cushing tank farm in the Midwest region. Many refineries in the Gulf Coast region provide millions of barrels per day, This region accounts for almost half of U.S. refining capacity. The refineries produce large amounts of refined petroleum product, like gasoline and jet fuel. The negative impacts of the Keystone XL project are too immense to outweigh the need for heavy crude oil in the United States.…
The Exxon Valdez spill is one of the most catastrophic disasters in American History. On March 24, 1989 Exxon Valdez freighter was on its way to its destination point in Valdez when the oil freighter struck a reef. When hitting the reef the Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the very well-known waters called Prince William Sound. The spill has affected well over a thousand miles of the Southwest Alaskan short lines. The spill killed many different types of species of birds. The spill killed many species of fish and other sea animals.…
Josh Fox is the main character in the documentary, Gasland, and he can sell his land for $100,000 to the government for them to put in natural gas areas and drill wells for it. Other home owners with much land would do this to get money but then once the natural gas was set all over their land, there was a problem. After the wells were drilled, water started going “bad” and people became ill because of the contaminated water. For example, one family’s water was so polluted that their water was able to catch on fire. Another example of bad water was that the animals on a farm would drink this water and start losing their hair.…
As controversy continues to rise, political and moral disputes encompass the decision to construct the extension of a tunnel containing a composition of today’s most beloved resource, and what has been referred to as “black gold” by the Arabs during the 20th century oil boom. The Keystone XL Pipeline would potentially transport thousands of barrels of oil from its source in Alberta, Canada, to refineries throughout the Midwest and Gulf Coast region of the United States. The extension would add to the number of pipelines already established in the U.S. and continue to convey the tar sands, a compound of clay, sand, water, and bitumen that its lead producer manufactures. The debate of whether or not the construction of this conduit should actually take place has been a hot topic for many politicians and environmentalists. Should the United States authorize the Keystone XL Pipeline to import tar sand oil from Canada?…
In Garrett Hardin’s essay, Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor, Hardin describes the wealthy population of the world as being in a single lifeboat that is almost filled until buckling while the poor population of the world treads water below. Hardin’s essay gets his readers to feel the natural instinct to survive. The lifeboat metaphor that Hardin uses relieves the wealthy population of their moral obligations to the less fortunate, but in addition, puts all of the blame and cause of the depletion of earth’s resources on the poor. As much as his argument may make sense, there are some flaws in his way of thinking. Alan Durning, who noticed that major flaws with Hardin’s essay, wrote on what he thought about the topic that Hardin has brought to his attention. In Durning’s essay, Asking How Much Is Enough, he argues that it is not overpopulation that is depleting the earth’s resources, but overconsumption of the resources by the wealthy population. The arguments in Durning’s essay makes the reader realize that the way Hardin uses the metaphorical lifeboat to persuade his readers into thinking the same thing as he does and shows that Hardin wrongly places the blame of all of earth’s financial stability problems on the poorer population.…
The Commons was described as a large open forest area that was open for anyone to utilize. In the modern world, there is no such thing as a Commons. With Andy’s lecture I can understand the comparison between the peasants of old England and the peasants of modern “poor” countries. The peasants of England were pictured as helpless, but even through all these adversities, the Commons were a place to go if all else fails. Peasants of today have no similar options, but instead are shut out of society and left to protect themselves. Something that the two parties share is that both lived (or have lived) in a society that is dominated by the rich. The wealthy have the power to control the resources the poor have access to like how the Commons were taken from the…
Keystone XL pipeline will be great for United States economy because it will bring more taxes to government from oil companies and public. However, the effect on the environment, economy and residents of America are destructive. The things through which people and environment will be affected are: Water, forest destruction, disease.…
Political Science and Public Administration are scientific studies that pull from a variety of different fields. Majors of study at institutions of higher education like Accounting, Agriculture, Anthropology, Communications, Economics, Education, History, Marketing, Medicine, Psychology, and Sociology all are encompassed within Political Science and Public Administration. Within Political Science policy is set, budgets are made, and laws are carefully thought out with consideration from all the aforementioned studies within the spectrum of post-secondary education. To some individuals in society, the theoretical studies invested into Political Science and Public Administration are extremely vague because the common misconception is that once…
The Keystone Pipeline represents the worst environmental outcome for not only the United States, but for the world. A possible pipeline will hurt the economy, increase unemployment rate, affect the health of millions of people, and boost greenhouse gas emissions, speeding up the rate of global warming. The project creates 1179 miles pipeline underground in replacement of the existing shorter one to transport crude oil from Tar Sands in Canada to refineries across the United States. The project plan has already been rejected once by President Obama, but TransCanada, the pipeline company, has filed another application with slightly different terms for the same idea.…
