What were the positive and negative effects of imperialism for the British, the mother country, and for India, the colony? Imperialism in India had a lot of positives effects towards the colony and county. Imperialism also bought many negative effects towards India. You can say that India improved a lot from when the imperialism started. Britain as well prospered because of there imperialism. Imperialism affects India and its country and colony in a positive way. This was done because the way British came and started helping the colony because the colonizers helped built a civilization. Document 1 stated “In return the progressive nations bring to the people of those garden spots the foodstuffs, and manufacture they need. They develop the territory by building roads, canals, railways, and telegraphs. The progressive nations can establish schools and newspapers for the people of the colonies” that practically means that they helped each other. The British helped stop slavery and forbidden the ownership as said in document 5 by a British writer Sir Reginald Coupland “action was taken to stop infanticide... slave trade was ended and the owning of slaves was forbidden” even though the British were white man they still believed in human right. Imperialism helped improve many aspects of India. For example the British developed new ways of communication. The negative parts were that, the document 2 includes “British/Europeans always took up the higher places in every department of government and they lived off the Indians work”. Jawaharlal Nehru in document 6 explained that India Supplied raw materials and provided markets for England’s industrial goods, yet destruction of industry lead to unemployment on a vast Scale and poverty of the country grew. The standard of living fell to terribly low levels. The government was not able to put the Indian in the higher level Gandhi’s criticized imperialism. This was because the English people have taken charge of there government and made them do all the work and now hey can’t react towards the government. But the imperialism was still a great effect on India and its colony. They provided and improved the living of India. They as well were able to construct ways to travel and trade and made education better. The bad parts were that the colony was not able to be in a high level in the government.

British imperialism improved the lives of the colonized Indians to no extent due to the unreasonable economic policies that lead to famine, the extreme poverty caused by the heavy taxation of Indians, and the unjust and one-sided British government that gave the colonized no say. The lives of the Indians were not improved from the British imperialism because of the implementation of cash crops and mercantilism that lead to starvation. Cash crops are crops produced for their commercial value rather than for the use of the grower. The British forced Indians to only grow cash crops to strengthen the British economy.…

The British imperialism of India was beneficial to the Indian people because it helped fix many wrong things in the government. In the Hindu culture, there are many traditions that take place and that are harmful to the Hindu people. One of the terrible traditions is infanticide, which is the killing of an infant. Another benefit for the Hindu culture is that there was equality between men for justice purposes. The imperialism by British was beneficial because it caused, “[a]bolition of suttee and infanticide… Allowing remarriage of Hindu widows, and charitable aid in time of famine… Freedom from oppression caused by the caprice or greed of despotic rulers, and from devastation by war. Equal justice between man and man” ( Naoroji 131-36). The British abolished the killing of infants and suttee, the suicide of a widow at the funeral of the husband, which saved the lives of many infants as well as many grieving widows. There was also saving from the oppression from other rulers, thus leading the Hindu to keep their religion. The benefits of British imperialization outweighed the costs because it saved the lives of many Hindu widows and Hindu…

While the British government was efficient at ruling India and left India peacefully, the overall political Impact that the British had on India was quite negative, because they governed only for themselves and created mass amounts of conflict when they left. Britain’s political relations with its American colonies were effected as a result of the French and Indian War. America today, as we know it, would not be the same if the English had not been victorious over the French. The war determined who would gain control of the new world. The maps in Document A show that before the war, the French controlled most of the new land, but after the war, the English had secured the new world as its territory. It is easy to see that Britains victory over the French helped Britain politically, however; it produced tension with its American colonies. Shortly after the war, England realized what the war had really cost them tons of money they did not have. Britain expected the colonies to help pay the debt from the war, but the colonists felt it was not their responsibility. This controversy contributed to the political strain between Britain and its American colonies. The French and Indian War altered Britains relationship with its American colonies drastically, as Britain imposed its political authority on the colonists.…

The events of 1857-8 are extremely significant and have changed India dramatically into the India we see today. We see the British taking over India from the East India Company after a ‘mutiny’ in 1857 and welcoming it into a colony in the British Empire. It was described as “the jewel in the crown” of the British Empire because of their rich sources such as silk that were deported from India to countries in Europe. This made Britain considerably richer and greedier as they increased their power by continuing to expand their empire. The British made many positive changes as well as negative changes in India during their rule such as introducing technology such as expanding railways for everyone to use, and education for some Indians. These are just a few changes that helped a trade-inspired outlook within India. Nevertheless, they also took advantage of the Indians by making money from their resources, charging them heavy taxes to use in Britain and sending many Indians to fight for Britain in the First World War. We see that many changes shaped the modern India today, but why do these changes matter to us?…
