Colonoscopy Case Summary

A 29-year-old male came to the office with complaints of mild abdominal pain along with periodic bloody diarrhea persisting for last 1 month. He had previous history of similar episodes which resolves on its own. He also complained about mild pain in his knees and ankle-joints for last 6 months. He had noticed also few painful oral lesions. During the physical examination, erythema nodosum was found on his ankles along with two aphthous ulcers approximately 1x1 cm inside his mouth which are mildly tender. Colonoscopy was performed which shows patchy rectosigmoid inflammation with normal rectosigmoid mucosa suggesting 'skip areas'. The biopsy of the involved colonic mucosa revealed noncaseating granulomas.
